It changed when they added a seventh playoff team to each conference. With 7 teams, they can only give the 1 seed a bye to keep the same general format.

I only realized this last year
(this change happened for the 2020 season) when the Lions were trying to get the #1 seed. They might get it this year!

I'm not sure what was the dumber decision there. Allen throwing that ball to begin with or the Patriots defensive back trying to return that out of the end zone.

Yes, the 2 seed hosts the 7th seed on Wild Card weekend, so currently that would be the matchup.
