I think it's not allowed because it would mean not everyone was wearing the exact same cap.

during their championship run, willie stargell handed out stars to players who had particularly good or important contributions. The players would add them to the caps, so you had some guys w/ a few and guys w/ a full cap full (like closer Kent Tekulve).

MLB didn't seem to care at the time, and as hendersonshands has pointed out, the rule has pretty much always been that all players must wear identical, matching uniforms. In the age of marketing and brand awareness, I can see how it would get enforced must more stringently than the late 70's.

Although I appreciate them now, I loathes them when they beat The Big Red Machine in the 1979 NLCS

You gotta let a team with a player named Starling hand out some stars for their throwback caps

Athletic organizations will spend millions analyzing how better to connect with everyday fans, yet they miss the obvious time and again. Bring out the corporate branded leagues with robots already, it's where this is all heading.

I thought that was Bob Walk as an old man in the Root booth in the pic..only spent his rookie season as a Phillie, but despite high ERA, was 11-7, and an integral part of a World Series Champion..this Phanatic loves him.

I love that picture. The Cobra could play. Sad to hear he has Parkinson's.

Those old pirate uniforms were cool. The battles between the Big Red machine and the Pirates were a lot of fun.
