No, 2 points plus they have to kick the ball back from their 20, is sufficient

Teams also get the ball after a safety. If you account for that, I bet the overall expected points added for a safety is way higher than it is for a field goal. 2 points is fine.

2 is good.

You get the ball as well

Even at 2 points. Ask yourself what you would want to begin the game with. A kickoff return for a TD or to get a safety on the opponents opening drive. I would take the safety.

I would take the TD easily. Getting 7 guaranteed is much better than 2 and the chance to score more from about my own 40.

in 2019, the average points per drive across the NFL was 1.99 with a starting field position of the 28.5 yard line.

Assume ~40 yard line starting after a free kick, that probably increases to 3 or so.

Should be no points, and similar to a “touchback” where the ball is placed at the twenty and possession goes to the defense.

Absolutely. I'd be fine if it counted as 6 and was just considered a defensive touchdown

So you see no difference between a RB or QB getting stripped of the ball in the endzone and recovered by the defense and just tackling an offensive guy in the endzone who still has possession of the ball?

So much for the ball and ball security meaning everything.

No. Stop changing the rules of a game that was perfectly fine the way it was in the 80s and 90s just because the NFL wants more money drummed up from fantasy football nerds.

You know what’s boring? Knowing that the team with the ball is going to score 80% of the time and both QBs are going to throw for 350+ yards because rules have been changed where playing defense is frowned upon.

And now onside kicks are nearly impossible to convert. That’s bullshite too.

Not really. If the running back makes it to his end zone and gets tackled with possession of the ball, it's 6 points. I see no reason why the same can't apply to the other side of the field.

Give me the Kickoff & 7 points . Why would a coach give up 5 points for another early possession?

I don't know man, that seems wonky to me.

A TD is possession of the ball.

Awarding a safety 6 points is basing saying possession of the ball is just as valuable as non-possession.
Technically you're making the safety not equal to the TD but making a safety higher up the food chain if a safety doesn't need possession.

In reality, safeties are so rare that it probably wouldn't make a huge difference either way.

If they didn't get the ball too I'd say yes.

Yeah, getting the ball back is a big part of it. The 2 points is fair.

This. Or more. Easier to score TD than get a safety.

2 points SEEMS too small. Safeties are very difficult to achieve, so seems like they should be worth more.

However you can't ignore the fact you also immediately gain possession of the ball and your opponent has to kick from the 20, so you get good field position as well.

So that situation is worth a couple points on average for sure.

So lets say the offense has 1st down on the 1 yard line. It's easier for them to drive 99 yards for a TD than the defense sack or stop you in the endzone over 1 yard?

And a safety can be intentional grounding in the endzone like Tom Brady in the Super Bowl...or even simple holding is safety - and we all know the NFL isn't reluctant to call offensive holding on lineman regardless of whether it's in the endzone.

That seems like a cheap 6 points calling holding in the endzone. And it would encourage more safeties because lineman would be terrified to hold and therefore make safeties easier as the defense just blitzes the crap out of them.

No. 2 and the ball back is a solid prize.
