Texas probably is the only program willing to pay a buyout $20 million and then a new contract on top of it.

Not having to coach at a football school would be the main reason he'd leave Bama for Austin.

Actually he has stated he rather coach at a football school. But maybe that’s just coach speak.

Texas there's a coach in Missouri you can have.

Don’t understand why they have to add any of them right now
They seem pretty content where they are right now, and don’t see them adding anyone for a while

That's brutal
The guy who took them out of the tourney by hitting two FTs this year was a 58% FT shooter on the season. They had some super shitty luck in two of their losses.

Smart getting out before Texas gets rid of him
Flamed out of this year's tourney
Will lose his best player to NBA
He was on the hot seat and may not have survived after next year anyway
This gives him a clean start at a rebuild without pressure of Texas
This
He grew up in Wisconsin so he is familiar with the area. He was the "it" guy for YEARS after the Final Four run that many tried and couldn't get until Texas finally did. He came in with a ton of hype and has never come close to living up to it. In six years there he has a sub-.500 record in Big 12 play and has never made it past the first round of the NCAAT. That includes losing to a small small school in Texas that many in the state may not even know exists with arguably his best team at UT. That same school (Abilene Christian) got blown out by a UCLA team that barely made the NCAAT in the next game.
He was "smart" enough to know that even if he did make it to next season at UT he was likely going to be under an ultimatum to win big or else. Something he likely wasn't going to do with their personnel losses from this season. Marquette has a good tradition in a good conference and is capable of competing on a national level. Staying one more season at Texas was going to be a waste of time so he wisely parachuted out to a pretty good situation.

So would I, but don't think it will happen. They were only waiting for UConn to come back home and they did.

This
We won’t see the Big East expand unless teams like Syracuse or Pitt decide to leave the ACC (which they won’t)

"the texas fan base is frustrating. he built a good team this year with a lot of good players. they won the big 12 tournament which is a monumental achievement for the program. the program is (was?) on a fantastic trajectory. losing in the tournament happens to 67 teams every year. it isnt that uncommon. building a basketball powerhouse takes time. coaches in basketball need to establish their recruiting network and systems for years before a program becomes elite.
but yet all i hear around town is shaka is a bad coach. some false sense of entitlement of a program that traditionally hasnt been elite, just sort of good. i dont get where the sense of we should be better than that, we should get whatever recruits we want comes from. really low iq basketball fanbase.
i dont often take the race card seriously, but i think this has a lot to do with race. the old white men at texas dont want a brown guy as coach. i honestly believe that has more to do with it than performace. if you disagree i respect that opinion, i wouldnt take it credibly if it was another fan base.
/rant"
This is, quite frankly, bullshite.
Abilene Christian went D1 in 2013 and just won their first NCAA tournament game. Shaka has been at Texas 6 years and still has not won his first Tournament game.
He has had 5 straight top 20 recruiting classes, multiple NBA players and yet is still a complete failure. He would have been fired long ago, if the previous AD didn't give him 5 yr fully guaranteed after losing in the first round to an 11 seed as a six in year 2.
His overall record is 109-86, he is 52-56 in conference (under .500).
His big achievement this year was winning two games in the conference tournament, against a team that played 4 games in 4 days, vs 2 games with 1 forfeit and a day off before the final. They still almost lost.
If Texas gave a shite about Basketball he would have never seen year 5.

In SLU's case, as much as it pains me, Ford is the right guy for the job because I don't trust the admin to NOT fall on their dicks again. Just remain in the top 4 of the conference and get one of the two bids every two or three years.

Watch out for Texas to make a love at FSUs Leonard Hamilton.

I’m gonna go out on a limb and say Shaka’s tenure at Marquette will more closely resemble his time at VCU than Texas

Thank you for this post that cuts through the “Texas sucks, is arrogant and racist” bullshite that is automatically spewed from hatred and/or jealousy.
There were several games this season when the team was outplayed and out-coached. The haters in this thread were likely piling on when the Longhorns lost to Abilene Christian with the same hatred, just from a different (yet contradictory) angle.
Haters gonna hate, and TEXAS can do better than Rick Barnes and Shaka Smart.
