then you are looking at this objectively and not subjectively which gives you bias.
ill take a decathlete anyday over some running back as well.

have you watched any golf in the last 12 years?? he is not the greatest athlete ever but he is arguably the greatest sports figure ever to live. it is difficult to comprehend how good the guy is.
Listen the guy is an amazing golfer and a huge star, but to try an say that the greatest sports figure ever is a golfer is just plain retarded. Not enough people care about golf to make that claim.

Oh and by the way the greatest athlete of alltime is Jim Thrope end debate.

and a football player can do what they do?
your comparing an apple to an orange anyways so its all irrelevant.
however ill stand by my original post saying that alexander karelin is the best athlete ever.
easily could have played in the NFL.

most normal people, if trained properly from childhood, can do stuff gymnasts do.

Athleticism is the base ability/talent to perform physical feats. A great athlete is someone that has a lot of that ability/talent for those means.
Matt Jones is a great athlete, if he had anywhere close to a decent head on his shoulders he could have competed in a few of sports at a professional level. As it is, it shows how athletic he is that he was able to be a play maker at QB in the SEC with that idiotic head of his.
Now, if you specify sports athlete, as in the ability to perform general or specific sporting feats, then a guy like Matt Jones isn't even a pimple on the much less physically talented Jerry Rice's arse.

you cant train a human being from a young age to be an NFL running back or NFL player

yeah nobody cares about golf and tiger. his win yesterday was the lead on sportscenter over the elite eight games. also did you see the espn poll - tiger's putt was the most impressive play this weekend. keep on telling yourself that golf is insignificant
i know it pains you that the most incredible athlete alive is a golfer. we have never seen an athlete like him before in any sport. one day you will realize this.

I beg to differ but really, who cares about gymnasts.
And Tiger Woods being a great athlete is akin to saying Richard Petty in No. 2 on the list.

You'd rank Matt Jones in the same breath as
Deion Sanders
Randy Moss
Terrel Owens
Michael Jordan
Herschel Walker
Bo Jackson
Mike Vick
Reggie Bush
Barry Sanders
Eric Dickerson
Jerry Rice
Muhammad Ali
Jesse Owens
?????????????
Maybe not as accomplishments with a few of those but he's overall more athletic than some of those on that list.

again, i don't think anyone is saying that tiger is one of the greatest "athletes" of all time. that would be foolish. we all know tiger couldn't play any other sport at the professional level. however, he should be in the conversation when discussing the greatest sports figures of all time.

Sure, I'll agree to that. Just like Richard Petty.

I didn't read all of this...but the answer is
The World Record holder in the Decathlon. Running, Throwing, and Jumping. What else is there?
A lot of people can play individual sports. Not many people can combine all the above skills.

I haven't read a single post in this thread yet, but I would imagine it has degenerated into "is golf a sport" by now considering the Tiger Woods mention in the opening post
If you don't think golf is a sport, just watch the 'Haney project' on the golf channel and you will see a tremendous athlete in Barkley struggle like hell with the sport

No way. Karelin dominated greco for over a decade, but to say he could easily play in the NFL, shows your lack of understanding of what it takes to be a a NFL player.

I'm far from an expert but here is how I see this:
There are basically 2 ways to classify any sporting ability - athleticism and skill.
Every sport is some combinataion of these two abilities with some sports obviously requiring more of one than the other.
Football - other than kickers and to some extent quarterbacks - more athleticism than skill.
Basketball, Hockey, Tennis, Soccer, and Gymnastics - more skill but requires a great deal of athleticism to compete at a high level.
Baseball - kind of hybrid of the two - more skill on offense (hitting) and more athleticism on defense.
Golf, Bowling - much more skill than athleticism.
Track and Field, Swimming - mostly athleticism but technique (skill) makes you more efficient.
Just my two cents.

How pathetic that you guys only consider the greatest athletes to be people of your era. The greatest athlete in American history is this man:

I'm still liking Jim Brown to be put up in the mix
