How is it different than the basketball selection committee?

It is hilarious watching it finally dawn on so many posters here what this committee is really all about.

Face it, their goal is going to be taking the top 4 teams that will benefit ESPNs ratings the most. ESPN literally owns CFB now.

We are back to the old "AP" system where the media darlings will get every benefit of the doubt.

How did you feel last week when it was announced the committee won't be taking Strength of Schedule into consideration? Wonder why that was done?

Of course you do...

in the same interview she said she was a bama fan growing up but that Stanford is who shes cares about. I think she would lean more towards LSU if were purely SEC considerations at hand...if she would lean at all towards one or the other, consciously or subconsciously

It's really not, just the number of teams is different. There are no auto bids either. Someone will win a P5 conference championship but be left out. With this committee, I don't expect any non-champions to get in, especially in the first year.

I'd be all for that. The BCS may have been criticized a lot, but it got the championship game right more often than not.

Agreed. The bcs might not have had the top two teams ranked accordingly but they were always within the top 4. Auburn, rematch, etc.

I didn't see or hear anything about this. Gotta link? If true then the selection process is just BS.

Are you only now realizing that this committee is a bad idea?

Then how do you suggest they do it?

You've got 120+ unequally situated teams of which you have to somehow select the 4 "best" to play for the title. How do you do it "fairly"?

The BCS and it's use of completely objective computers was great until it wasn't. After 2003 more emphasis was put on a poll in which ACTIVE HEAD COACHES selected the 2 "best" team.

In any system where a group of people subjectively choose the "best" teams there is going to be the potential for bias. The current system is the fairest way to produce a national champion to date.

This is College Football we are talking about, literally every single human with any interest in college football has "their" team, and a bias. It's not a perfect system but to think that the Top 4 at the end of the year is going to be any different from the Top 4 of the BCS or the polls is silly. These people all have reputations and they don't want to screw this up.

I dont know why they just didnt keep the BCS formula to determine the 4 playoff teams. Nobody said that the BCS didnt get the top 2 teams right, people just questioned if two was enough to determine a true champion. The BCS always got the top 3-4 right. Again, they should have just kept the BCS formula. Besides, the crystal football was the best trophy in all of sports!

2003 USC got screwed.
2004 Auburn got screwed.
there are more examples of how the BCS got it wrong, those two just off the top of my head.

Can we see how it plays out first? Don't understand how giving your opinion on something we have no idea about is relevant.

Wasn't the BCS. It was the fact only 2 teams could make it. The teams who made it were deserving.

My concern is how ESPN has been trying their hardest to craft the playoff into a matchup of 4 conference champions. All of this "the big 10 will get left out" talk when in all likelihood two conferences will get left out.

They're trying their hardest to make sure everyone agrees that four conference champions should make it.

Sec Big12 and Pac12 are almost auto ins. So it's very likely 4 conference winners are in.

There aren't any other examples. and these were the only years where it was clear that 3 teams deserved to have a shot at the title.
I don't think anyone would argue that the best team in the country resided in the top 4 of the BCS every year. Instead of having the coaches poll and Harris Poll, they should have gotten this committee to vote and submit their poll and still use the BCS to determine the top 4. Make the committee poll be worth 2/3's and the computers to be worth 1/3.

Agree. People are already saying it sucks before the first rankings come out. Some don't want it to work.

How do you know BYU doesn't belong in the playoff? It's only week 3 and they just destroyed Texas.
