The NFL regular season has 272 total games. MLB has 2,430. Do you honestly think NFL ratings would stay anywhere near as high as they are if each team had 162 regular season games like MLB?

That’s not the question

That's the answer to what OP wants to know though.

You aren't going to have monster ratings for individual regular season games when you have 2,450 of the fricking things. To expect a huge ratings boost just b/c other major sports are done is ridiculous. Comparing MLB ratings to NFL is even more ridiculous b/c there are so few chances to watch those teams by comparison.

It should, especially with THE JUDGE making a Triple Crown run in HISTORIC fashion. BIG DUMPER isn’t making it easy for him in the race to be crowned Dong King. It’s officially the SUMMER OF DONGS!

That’s exactly what happens to NBA ratings after football ends

Nice! I wish I could get this interested. Have the WANT to be an MLB fan.

Only made a thread because:
- something to talk about
- mbs is turning into a WBB board
- MLB is not reaching me, I have to go out of my way to find MLB content

No shite ratings for all sports go up when the NFL is gone. Once again, the NFL only has a guaranteed 17 games per team. So OF COURSE NFL will eat the ever living frick out of ratings against sports they compete against.

The same is not true for NBA and NHL. They, like the NBA, have a frick ton of games. Their regular seasons and playoffs are not eating into MLB ratings the way NFL eats into everyone else.

It’s a great point. But my contention is: how are MLB ratings the same in May at July. They are the only show around but people would rather watch talking heads ramble about NFL. MLB should celebrate June at the time of the year everyone watches. Instead they change their team logos to rainbows in June and every team has a Pride game.

Any chance you get to see Misiorowski and/or Ohtani pitch?

If MLB playoff races started around now and playoffs were in August, culminating in the WS wrapping up right before football season starts you probably would see ratings go up. Alas, they're not going to shorten the season and the only way to make it line up this way is to start the season in February which isn't really feasible for a lot of the northern teams

Because the stakes are low and don't start to ramp up until September when playoff races heat up, but by that time football has started.

Just depends on the rest cycles. Small chance of Kershaw vs Misiorowski but that may be the Monday matchup. We'll be there the Tuesday.

Mlb thrives on regional networks.

The problem with the MLB is that the season has so many games that the individual games for the first 5 months of the season seem largely inconsequential. Casual fans aren't going to be "all in" over games right now when they know there are 80+ more to be played.

Do you want to know why the NFL blows every other league out of the water? Scarcity. There are only 17 games in the season...which gives each individual game FAR more meaning than one of 82 (NBA) and 162 (MLB). And those games are only once a week as opposed to the MLB where a team routinely will play 8, 9, 10 days in a row. The demand for NFL games FAR outpaces the supply.

If Christmas were 162 days of the year each individual day wouldn't be all that special.

Ok?

MLB is the healthiest it’s been in some time.

As mentioned before nationwide ratings are up.

World Series ratings were up.

Regional broadcasts remain strong.

Lots of young stars.

I think they are perfectly happy with how they are doing.

I don’t think anyone is under the illusion baseball is going to overtake football as the most popular spectator sport in the country. That ship sailed many years ago

Yep. In football your team only plays once a week. You miss the game, you have to wait a week to see them again. You miss a baseball game, they play again tomorrow and the next day and so on so there's no urgency to make damn sure you watch the game. There's also very little hype in the leadup to a baseball game, while we spend the entire week between football weekends recapping the week that just ended and previewing the weekend coming up.

You lose a football game and it carries roughly the equivalent weight of a 5 game losing streak in the NBA/NHL or a 10 game losing streak in the MLB. It makes a singular loss or win feel that much more devastating or exhilarating.
