You should not rely solely on the transfer portal. It's definitely good to fill holes but it shouldn't be used to completely overhaul your roster.

tell me i'm wrong.
But this got me curious: since the NFL draft is good indicator of a college's talent level, and recruiting ratings are quite predictive, especially over multiple years, I wanted to see how many players in the most recent draft transferred at least once in their careers.
In particular, by my count, of the 259 players drafted, 65 transferred at least once in their careers; however, 24 of those were either between divisions, JUCO transfers, within non-FBS division (one from a D2 school to a D2 school), or from Canada (one player).
So 41 players transferred between FBS schools, and of the 259 players drafted, 247 were drafted from an FBS school. So ~16.6% of players drafted from an FBS school transferred between FBS schools (or ~1 out of every 6 players). Interestingly, by round, the first and last rounds had the lowest percentage.
Now I'm sure this number will increase as the portal becomes more popular, but I'm guessing the extra year of eligibility due to COVID, provided a bit of an increase than there otherwise would be. I'm guessing this will peak in the coming years.
I think all in all, shows that the most talented/successful players are by far more likely to come from their original FBS school, not via the transfer portal. And would take nearly a 3-fold increase of transfers drafted to get on par with those who do not transfer.

The transfer portal is for lazy head coaches that don’t want to recruit

For Arkansas, our best players have been from the portal.

Drew Sanders from Alabama transferred to Arkansas and became a second team all American.
Cody Schrader from Truman State, transfers to Missouri and led the SEC in rushing.

Where's Ole Miss? The Lane Train is the Portal King of the SEC. Kiffin is a heavy portal guy and his NIL is set up for success. Based on a 10-2 record and this year's team not bailing as soon as the season is over, maybe he has it figured out, at least more than most.

Well they quadrupled the number of wins from the previous year. Is that not a positive result?

You still have to recruit in the portal.

Ask Deion how skipping out on recruiting and only utilizing the transfer portal did for him last year
He won 400% more games?

Actually, what Neon Deion did was put Buffaloe Butts in the seats. They were the national TV darling on Friday nights. Colorado made a killing.
