Since Payton became a head coach he has more wins in the NFL than any other coach during the same amount of time, last year not included. And that was with taking over a horrific New Orleans team. I would say he is top 5. Easy.

i stand by my assessment… he may be a great coach, but we won't really know til Drew hangs it up… having a great QB goes a LONG way in this league… time will tell how "great" of a coach he is…

i'm not bashing him, at all, but he's had the luxury of having a Drew Brees in the prime of his career… that's all i'm saying...

Since he entered the league, he's clearly top five. He's not the same as before though. Perhaps too many pills in his year off, perhaps arrogance, perhaps Brees not looking as sharp, whatever the reason, he isn't the guy whose playcalling terrorized the league in 2009. In tight games he panics as much as his team does and is too conservative or abandons the run entirely. As the general glue he's pretty solid but he's taken a step back in the playcalling department.

Ryan deserves more of the cred for turning 7 into 11.

In that case Bill Bellichick isn't that great either because he has only won Super Bowls as a head coach with Tom Brady under center. See how stupid that sounds? Come on dude. Bill should get credit for seeing something in Brady, the same as Payton should get credit for going with Brees when no one wanted him.

You really think Fox had a lot to do with [the Tebow-led] Denver team making the playoffs?
You really think he didn't?

That Denver team made the playoffs because of miracle after miracle after miracle.

You could say Fox played a part because he just put Tebow in the lineup, and let the craziness happen.

What did Brees do before having Payton as his coach? I mean other than being thrown away and not wanted in Miami.

Belichick
Payton
Tomlin
McCarthy

Let's hold the phone on all these other newer coaches until they have done it for as long as the guys listed above...

Anyone who doesn't have Payton in the top 5 is a fricking idiot and shouldn't be listened to.

If he wins 1 or 2 in this postseason, I'll put him in.

Not being able to get your team's shite together on the road, repeatedly, year after year, is on the head coach. Especially with a generally above-average team.
