Here is some Gallup polling on sports popularity. On the question "What is your favorite sport to watch?", football passed baseball in the 1960s as the most popular sport. Before the 1994 strike, there was a 14-point spread between the two. The most recent poll, done in 2008, showed a 31 point spread. Baseball has been about even with basketball since the mid 1990s, but that includes college and pro-basketball responses. The most recent poll only added up to 68%, so I guess there were a lot of "no favorite" responses with a few soccer/NASCAR/tennis/golf responses sprinkled in.

I don't think looking at one year really tells us what we need to know. Last year (2010) was bad for MLB WS - Giants v Rangers and perfect for the NBA Championship - Lakers v. Celtics. We need decade #s.

the world series definitely has higher ratings than the nba finals over the past decade
the gap b/w the MLB and NBA seems significant in terms of each other, but it's really not much compared to their gap and NFL/CFB

Clearly it is football then MLB/NBA. But the topic is "Why is baseball dying" - it is not. It is #2.

4-5 years ago baseball was on the brink of a major downturn and they've done well to re-market themselves
they've really started to push local support over national appeal. owners have lowered the # of mega deals also

MLB is dying out, baseball isn't.
Length of the schedules I believe.

That's why I prefaced it with, "obviously this doesn't mean everything"
But if baseball is still #2, it won't be for much longer. NBA overtaking the MLB is inevitable, and for many reasons.

Basically baseball is huge in markets with MLB teams or near MLB teams. Aside from a few bandwagon fan bases spread across the country (including the support of the Braves across the South), baseball draws little interest in large metropolitan areas without an MLB club (places like Portland, San Antonio, Austin, etc).
The NBA is a more accessible and watchable TV sport for a casual fan these days. Very few people have time to watch a three hour plus baseball game on television if they have little rooting interest in it. Even a sport like soccer with a long history of disinterest in America has a better TV watchability factor as it ends in little less than two hours time (see monster World Cup ratings for their odd broadcast times).

Youth baseball has turned into a rich kids game. So not as many kids grow up playing the game, so not as much interest when they get older.

Basketball is projected to be more popular than baseball by 2020. No link sorry, but I read this from a textbook pertaining to American sports.

perception is reality... most basketball players are black, but at least they're american...
baseball is almost gone to the latinos like boxing. surprisingly, we're taking soccer FROM the latinos.

Baseball is regional. When the Angels made the world series in 2002, they drew higher ratings in the LA area than any NBA finals game the Lakers ever played in their history...and LA is nuts about the fricking Lakers

The latinos that dominate baseball don't really dig on soccer - Venzuela, Dominican Republic.

Baseball minuses:
Requirements: too much equipment, space, people to play
Slow paced
Low Scoring
Low Action
Baseball Plusses:
Accessible - Football and Basketball have certain size requirements.
Best Live Game experience of ANY other sport
Family Friendly
Mano-a-Mano - Hitter vs. Pitcher is almost like boxing.
Less douchiness from players. - Jeter would be considered a saint in football or basketball
I fricking love baseball. I sucked at it in HS (but I was really fast), but I loved playing. I hate watching it on TV, but I would rather watch a live MLB game at a good ballpark than go the Superdome.
I love the game of football more than baseball, but baseball is the better experience.

What are these size requirements?
"best" live game experience?
Less douchiness? Link?
These are all opinion

In 2008, for the first time, over 43 million fans saw a minor league baseball game, it was the 5th straight year attendance had increased.
In 2009 MLB outdrew the NBA, NHL, NFL,& MLS combined.
