I just found it odd that he would allow that guy to fight his way in. The fact that he "rescued" one random girl was a red flag from the start. I think that was a part of his plan. When the world ends, grab the first young girl you see and drag her into the bunker.

Yep. Howard was overwhelmingly creepy from the get go. You can't have a character like that, then come in later and say "Oh wait, he's actually a good guy". Even when Howard started acting a little more normal, that doesn't erase what he's already done.
If they would have started the movie out with Howard being less creepy, I don't think you have as good of a movie as what turned out.

The movie makes you assume this. But there really isn't complete clarification.

Wow. So if I keep a human sized barrel of acid under my stairwell, I'm suddenly a serial killer?
Geez.

How about the scene where he dissolved a human body in a tub of said acid?

You have to be CRAZY to keep a drum of perchloric acid under your stairs. That's a really, really dangerous chemical. Where could you buy a drum of perchloric acid for the house? And how do you but it without Homeland Security paying you a vist?

You dissolve ONE BODY, and you're labeled for life.
The PC Police win again!

Probably one of the most stupid movies I've seen. Serial killer happens to be right about an alien invasion. Whoopie Do! If you paid attention to the previews you could have figured that out going in.
Girl in pickup truck with a fifth of scotch, a lighter that magically appears and some map paper makes a Molotov cocktail and brings down a major alien war craft. Oh, and before it crashes sets her back down on all four tires.
You can't make up a more stupid movie!

I really liked the movie. The only thing that bothered me was john goodman's heavy breathing. Good lord it was distracting.

LOVED the movie. Wish the tempo was either a bit faster so we get to see what it's like not inside a bunker or they end the movie with her looking at the spaceship. It took her like 5 minutes to take down a spaceship when those things are controlling cities? Would've been cool if the NEXT movie was something more along the lines of Battle of Las Angeles but with a Cloverfield twist/feel to it.
Also, the scene where he gives her ice cream before dinner, then says "we can have dinner the way it was supposed to be, me and you" not exact quote but along those lines, he CLEARLY didn't rescue her because "it was from the good of my heart" but really "here's nice young girl to accompany me..." He was shaved and cleaned up. He was wearing a nice button up too, right? I think he planned for some Netflix and Chill after dinner.
Overall, excellent film. And even if it was intended to be a different movie until somebody said "This won't sell, let's tie it to an older movie that hasn't gotten a sequel...hmmm, Cloverfield?" At least it means there might be another "Cloverfield" movie. If it just ended with the spaceships, it would've been badass. We see what "normal" people are doing while these things are trying to take over the planet.

Saw the movie last night with my gf. She loved it and kept squeezing my hands during intense scenes. We saw it in IMAX. Maybe 12 other people in theatre. It was ok. In my opinion I thought Howard was bat shite crazy. But that he was not wrong. Emmett tells Michelle that Howard was in the Navy and he worked with satellites. So maybe he came across some signals either while in the Navy or have access to signal frequencies on his radios he has that he knows it was an alien attack.
The questions about "Megan" will never be answered bc the 2 young characters decide to create a way out of there behind his back. That made me question the writers. How in the hell do they pull off creating a hazmat suit in a bunker where there is no privacy. Was Howard in a diabetic coma while they were in his room that was off limits unless given permission to have access to? Where was he while they were doing all this?
I was not shocked that he shot Emmett. He never wanted him there in the first place. I think reasons why he was allowed to stay were Emmett helped build the shelter so he knew some weakness probably and could frick some shite up. Also he knew how to waste the food. So Howard compromised and let him in.
The end sucked. A Molotov cocktail taking out an alien ship. Also the "mist" that comes from the alien ship only lasts 5 seconds? WTF!!!!! A mosquito spray from those damn trucks hang in the air forever and they shoot in the air not down from above.
I agree with a previous poster in that there is no way she will make it to Houston with all those alien bastards out there.
Like I said it was ok. Not really intense. No major surprises. Just more questions that will never be answered.

I thought that he let Emmett in because he knew how to break in and Walter didn't want to have to have that worry in the back of his mind. He kept him alive in case he needed him and killed him as soon as he was a liability.

I felt Howard killed him bc the situation became available for him to do that. As far as why Howard wanted Michelle all to himself? That question will never be answered fully. Was there a real "Megan"? Did she die bc he failed to protect her from dying? Did his ex truly take her away from him? Howard was crazy but turns out he knew what he was talking about. I just felt there could have been answers to questions that are left now bc of how the movie unfolded. Howard was angry when Emmett touched Michelle and he just needed a reason to kill him. Howard never fully trusted Emmett but did use him until he found a way to get rid of him.

Excellent thriller. I really don't care if it was meant to be something else. They gave it the same feel of Cloverfield, but gave us a different kind of movie. Well done all around. Winstead can carry a picture, so props to her.
What I really did like was she was actually smart. I get tired of films saying "Do this!" "Do that!", etc., because characters, for the most part, do everything to ratchet up tension by ignoring the obvious (Hey Walking dead, thanks for finally showing us people with Spears in season 6!!). She was actually doing all the right things, probably even smarter things than the audience would think, and they kept the tension moving that way. It was a refreshing take on a hero not getting into trouble because they do things wrong, but because they do things right.

It was like the script originally said Shreveport and the executive goons thought "no one will know where that is" so they ordered some some low level lackey writer to sneak into Abrams' back office and "CNTRL+H"' every occurrence of "Shreveport" and replace it with "Baton Rouge".
.....goes off to find what 'ctrl+h" does.....
Just saw it this weekend. I liked it a lot. Very enjoyable

Bumping a good thread because I watched on PPV. Good movie. The tie-in got me to watch this knowing it was a minor connection ahead of time.
Nothing is really confusing to me. His daughter was taken away. He kidnapped a surrogate a couple years ago. He probably killed her...I'm guessing it was less a cold murder and more like things got out of control. The movie starts with another kidnapping that probably coincidentally occurs with "the event."
The Emmett tension is because he doesn't want him hooking up with his daughter. Just a protective, crazy dad.
The alien stuff was fine. I liked it as a small ending piece. Also showed her growth heading to Houston. I only saw one spacecraft in the lightning and a long way to go. But anything after her decision to not run away is inconsequential to the movie. That's either food for thought or a sequel.
Very pleasant rental. Only 4 actors in the whole movie plus 3 more voices.
