It was just a joke. Some people here think they're above dark humor from atop their moral high horse. No one here knew this guy from Adam and will forget about him in 15 minutes.
I didn’t ”know” him, but I loved his shows. Dude had a serous angst vibe. Didn’t like his politics, but I can compartmentalize that. I wish more people could.

What about the guy that invented WAZE? What about the guy that invented Uber? What about the guy that invented Yelp!? Or a Google? Or Wikipedia?

Appreciating someone who brings the world to your living room in an effective manner is a phenomenal accomplishment. I would argue he’s a better hero than pretty much any politician due to the fact that he educated people on the world and asked for nothing in return.

Suicide is to be celebrated, didn’t you get the memo?
Then suicide has not affected your family.
This is the first time I'm actually questioning your moral integrity.

comparing tools to cultural shifts is pretty dumb

According to google there are 47 million more people now than in '99 here in the states. More people, more suicides.
Is the increase raw numbers or per 1000 people?

He was entertaining and taught me a ton about the world and food. I knew about his demons, so unfortunately this isn't a huge surprise.

He's hanging out with Charlie Manson right about now

Google and Wikipedia obviously, but I put decade, and I stand by that.

By that argument, Alton Brown has had an almost equivalent impact based on the content and format of Good Eats, Iron Chef, etc with minimal travel.

Not really
Dressing up and playing stupid skits and getting into food science is a little different than actually going into the different parts of the world
Maybe you think you've been fully exposed to Japanese culture because you went to a hibachi restaurant?

Alton Brown has been hugely influential, although probably more niche
The travel aspect of No Reservations really resonated with people

Alton Brown told my friend to make beef jerky on air conditioner filters, so frick that guy. Nothing adds to the taste quite like filter fibers.

In that case I have to wonder if medications really are a contributing factor. It could be a selection bias (the people on meds already have issues), but we have better mental health awareness in the past so we should have fewer issues now. People who need treatment are getting it.

I know teen suicide rates have been going up substantially but I'm not sure how much that moves the needle on the overall numbers
It's likely due to social media being so pervasive in our lives
