Too Many Characters Syndrome.

The show has cut well over a dozen major characters from the books altogether, and merged the storylines of many others. I don't always agree with the changes, but the source material was always going to be a challenge. Martin goes about 50+ POV chapters per book, on average, and seems to relish in at least dropping 1 to 3 new names every single one. In some cases, many, many more. So, while not everyone is significant, I bet there are over 1,000 named characters, historical and present in the 5 core novels to date, and probably several hundred additional names in the supplemental material.

So, I agree that it hurts the show to have so many characters, because television watchers aren't readers, mostly. Not judging, just saying.

The show has been harsh to the fan favorite characters but I still enjoy the show. Great production values and knowing at any minutes anyone can die keeps me on my toes.

Yeah I'm with you. It feels like the sole purpose of the show is for martin to just punk viewers now. I'm going to give this season one last chance, and if it still blows I'll call it quits.

I'll wait until the season is over and then binge watch, I'm hoping it will make it more enjoyable that way. Because watching week to week with this show specifically fricking sucks. Too many stupid characters and story lines to give a frick about

Quit GOT now...why? Over a lackluster season premiere? Episode 2's trailer already looks better and 3 will be the most epic of the season so far. My popcorn is ready.

Yeah, the book series was some of the best that has ever been written in the genre. And then the minor characters increased exponentially and the plot bogged down. The TV series was good but for some reason I lost interest, maybe because I knew there was no actual destination.

So yeah, despite all your negative votes I agree with you.

seasons 1 and 2 are the best. the rest have relied on major character deaths, so much so that it has become a gimmick. they save everything for the last 3 episodes of each season now

still better than most stuff, but a marked drop in quality from Seasons 1 and 2

If by each season now, you mean season 5, then I understand. That doesn't remotely describe season 4, and not really season 3 if we're being honest. I highly doubt it will end up describing season 6, either.

Does anybody outside of book purists actually think the show was at its best the first couple seasons?

I'm pretty close to where you are. I feel that season 5 was a bit weaker, but that's only because the tremendous drop in quality of A Feast for Crows.

Second half of season was good, first half dragged too much

No, but I sure don't hold it in as high a regard as I used too. They could easily get rid of half the plot lines they have now. If it wasn't for the white walkers, Jon Snow, and Tyrion, I'd be much more likely to bail on it altogether.

I disagree. The Arya plot is promising. They've done a pretty good job of adapting it from the book.

Wow you are so cool for going against the popular opinion on this show, glad you also cleared up the air on how you are smarter by having read all the books and thanks for starting a thread to tell all of us how you feel.

Most popular opinions are fricking stupid, and my opinion is that you're a douche. And the premier was an absolute shitfest.

the best seasons is 2, then 3, then 1, and then 4

5 is well below those 4

1 actually didn't have great production values but had such an engaging introduction it was stunning

Not yet. It all depends on the Snow story. If he's truly dead and gone forever with no return, I'm done with the series and the books. It really all depends on that for me.

still in but its getting harder and harder to see an ending in which all the main characters cross paths. Plotlines are not only growing into foreign locations involving new people, but new generations of backstory keep popping up.

This is true and it's what's bothering most people who want to know that a resolution will come. I'm not worried about it though. Just enjoying the ride. I trust things will work out at the end.

Seasons 1 and 2 were head and shoulders above the rest

-they didn't have to allot characters 5 minutes per episode at that point
-D&D did not have the freedom to butcher storylines at that point
