But I feel like the people who rave about merely "good" movies like this do so mostly because they don't go to plays or indie/foreign films and therefore are never really exposed to good or non-formulaic Hollywood movies.

I agree that most movies produced by Hollywood are garbage, but your statement smacks of pretention. Not everything produced by Hollywood is trash (just most of it). Likewise plenty of indie/foreign films are absolute shite.

The Big Lebowski is a comedic masterpiece. Some of the best writing, acting, and directing ever.

The thing about movies like this is that when people are constantly saying it's one of the funniest they've ever seen, then the person that hasn't seen it yet has expectations that must be matched or bested because of opinions that surround them.

When that doesn't happen, not only is there a letdown factor, but I think it inclines that person to more adamant in its perceived lack of quality.

TBL is an okay movie. I enjoy it, especially the dialogue. But I agree that it probably gets quoted in excess, and hyperbole drags down its luster.

In fact, I liken it to when The Dark Knight got vaulted up into the top 3 of IMDB's list. Good movie, but, fanboys, pipe the frick down.

I love the Coen Brothers, but I think Lebowski is overrated. Hell, I think its the Coen's fourth funniest movie behind Raising Arizona (which I think is one of the funniest movies ever) and then Hudsucker Proxy (ya know, for kids!) and O Brother Where Art Thou? (I'm a Dapper Dan man!)

But I do like Lebowski. We actually watched it the day after my dad's funeral and laughed our asses off during the ashes scene.

I still argue that a movie that made 17 million at the box office can not be over rated.

The masses are not proclaiming this the best movie ever. In fact, I have not seen many people proclaim this the best movie ever.

There are some very vocal fans that love to quote the movie. I am one of them. I enjoy the heck out of the film but it is not near my top 10.

I just don't see that it is over rated. Maybe by the vocal minority on this board, but I think the average Joe on the street has never even heard of this or any Coen film.

Unnecessary IMO.

Guess I'm just a "fanboy"... but I am surprised that this many people on this board think this film is "overrated".

The average Joe has never heard of No Country for Old Men? You know, despite the Oscar? Or Fargo? Despite the other Oscar? The Coens are hardly obscure.

Don't think it's fair to look to box office numbers to see if something is over/under rated. Look at the Matrix..it didnt do shite in theaters, but boomed to massive popularity later. Dividends dont determine quality.

Personally I know plenty of people IRL that like to pump TBL up whenever it comes up in conversation. Who doesn't quote Lebowski, Goodman, or Tuturro's character.

FWIW, I also agree that Raising Arizona is the CB's best work.

Not everyone watches the Oscars. And just winning an Oscar does not mean a lot of people saw the movie or know anything about the movie.

Fargo only made 25 mil domestic. No Country is their biggest hit, it made 74 mil.

I still think the average Joe has no idea who the Coens are. Yes they may know No Country, but I still say a movie that made on 17 mil is not over rated.

The Oscars are not a valid barometer to gauge whether the average Joe has seen or heard of a movie.

Never said the Coens were obscure. Just don't think the average Joe has seen many of their movies.

I have. But I have different tastes than the people that pushed Transformers to 400 million and Paul Blart to almost 150 million.

Matrix made 467 million world wide. Might want to change your tune that it made no money.

The first Matrix?

Coulda sworn it was a bust and only gained momentum in rentals, and pushed the 2nd and 3rd movies into Holylwood mega productions that reaped that figure you just produced.

Definitely got more popular once it was released on dvd, though, especially since it was only released on dvd in the beginning and not VHS because they wanted to make it harder for younger kids to have access to it.

regardless, even if that one example is wrong, box office numbers dont matter in this case for whether a movie is overrated or not. TBL has certainly aged well and has spread into circulation through word of mouth.

The Matrix made $463 mil. Reloaded made $742 mil and Revolutions made $427.

I'm surprised that you don't at least respect Lebowski, if this is true.

And I still disagree. Even on this site, I don't see many people proclaiming it in their top 5 or top 10.

Just think there are some fans on here that like to quote it all the time. That does not make it overrated.

You don't like Box office numbers. Well how about IMDB rating? It is only rated at #155.

That sure doesn't seem like a high fanboy ranking to me.

Heck, I think it is underrated based on that number. There are a ton of movies listed above it that I think suck compared to Lebowski.

For example, Zombieland just came out and it is already ranked higher than Lebowski.

Nope. No overrated around here for anyone to see.

Scratch that last comment directed to you. I'm glad you have "different" tastes.
