When I watched The Hobbit for the first time I enjoyed it. I watched the LOTR trilogy a few days later, and it made me realize how vastly superior those films are.
I'm reserving judgement for the Hobbit until the final one comes out. The Lord of the Rings was really just one massive 12 hour film. The Hobbit will be the same, if not more so. So I've really only seen the first third of the movie, to where I won't judge it solely on that.

I love the books and the movies, but Game of Thrones has really cast a shadow over these, IMO, and shown just how one-dimensional the characters are. Everyone is either totally good or totally bad with no shades whatsoever.
Different strokes for different folks. I have read every LOTR book and every ASOIAF book multiple times. I enjoy LOTR more. It has a far clearer purpose and Aragorn trumps any character from ASOIAF (since his equivalent keeps getting killed off).
That is for the books. As far as movies/tv shows go, it is no comparison. I couldn't make it past one season for ASOIAF. It changed too much from the books, diminished the direwolves, and was just not enjoyable. I could watch LOTR extended version every weekend.

I end up watchig these at the end of every summer. Such a great tale put onto screen.
The BR Ext. ED. Trilogy is very cheap on Amazon right now, btw.

The Hobbit is what it is, it will never come close to LOTR.

It isn't meant to. LOTR was written for adults. The Hobbit was written for kids. These two trilogies should not be compared.

The characters you listed do go through conflict, but it's always of the sort that is "powerful external evil making them not be themselves because they are actually good people". They all fell under the spell of the ring. Even Aragorn and Gandalf are tempted by it. To me, that doesn't really make them more complex.
But I would much rather watch LOTR movies than GoT TV show.

Actors commentaries are hilarious. I watch the special features more often than I do the films now.

game of thrones is more complex and interesting storylines, but it doesnt come close to to LOTR in battles, music, and a lot of shite.

I just bought the Lord of the Rings Extended Edition trilogy last night on iTunes...I am just 30 minutes into the first one, but it seems weird. In the back of my mind, I know that these added scenes were not "good enough" to be in the final cut...and the scenes aren't familiar to me yet.
I hope I end up enjoying the new scenes. Wish I had the option to see the original version too with my purchase.

The scenes absolutely were good enough. It was a matter of cutting the movies down to a watchable theatrical length. The scenes in Return of the King, especially, add in crucial plot points missing in the theatrical cut.

I thought the added first 30 minutes or whatever it was greatly improved fellowship. It seemed to be mostly right out of the book. It grounded the movie more in hobbiton, so you really felt at home there. Then when they were in tough times you felt their longing for hobbiton all the more.

They were cut for time. Many are well place homages to the books. All put more meat on the bones of the story. You will enjoy them (and don't neglect the extras...they are great - especially the discussions of Tolkien [you can tell there was a true devotion to the man by those involved])

It's sad looking at Orlando Bloom's IMDb filmography. He has nothing other than the next 2 Hobbit films on there. Hope he saved his LOTR/POTC/Hobbit money and uses it wisely. Just hope none of the GoT stars fizzle out like he did. Some of the hobbits (not including Elijah Wood) aren't really up to much either other than Dominic Monaghan being a douche on Twitter.

I suspect OB is doing fine. But, isn't his "lack" of work by choice (isn't he married with some chillins?)

He is a freaking Elf. He was lucky that he got any work. Not like there are tons of movies for Elves.
He needs to move to Keebler.

He has a child by Miranda Kerr.
And yeah, he was never really a good actor so I guess he's lucky that he got to be in 3 huge franchises.

I really have to disagree. There are many scenes that were good enough to make it and preferable to the theatrical version, like "Concerning Hobbits".

Hell, the fellowship is worth it just for the score to concerning hobbits. Just about my favorite piece of music in the whole trilogy and it didn't make the cut.
I like all 3 extended cuts far more than the theatrical releases.
Just wish they had released the extended cut of Return at the same time as the theatrical cut for the Special Trilogy Showing they had.
Still the most fun I've ever had at a theater.
