I've been on an airplane(overseas) when the passengers applauded when we landed.
I didn't know landing was such an unlikely scenario before getting on the plane.
This happened a few times to me this summer, mostly on the way to Spain. I don't understand it.

Well I've only had it happen on planes with a particularly bumpy ride. So people were - somewhat tongue in cheek - applauding the fact that we landed safely.

Happened on flight where it was some woman pilot's first flight of that type of plane. Was bumpy in there air and a really tough landing. The male captain announced for us to congradulate the broad on her first successful flight of that plane. It all made sense after his announcement.
Also the new Spiderman
ETA flight was Boston to ATL or ATL to Boston

the only 2 I can remember was Rocky 4 and Shawshank Redemption. When Rocky was slugging it out with Drago, I can still remember people jumping up and down and popcorn flying all over the place.

When Beasts of the Southern Wild ended, nobody moved. No one wanted it to end. The credits finished and then the crowd gave an ovation.

This is retarded to me. You clap for things like plays to reward the actors. None of the cast is in attendance when you start clapping in an empty theater.

Titanic and The Dark Knight Rises.

Did they clap at the Coach Coon part?
