Like I said, it's been awhile since I read the books. But I don't remember having an impression of him as all bad and only out for power. Certainly a Blackfyre on the throne was his goal, but I just think he also wanted it to be someone who would be a good ruler.

Perhaps I'm conflating book Varys with show Varys too much though.

Now, Tywin was definitely for his family first and foremost. He was ruthless for sure. But he had positive qualities. If circumstances played out differently he himself could have been a fairly good ruler. His downfall was his inability to actually interact with his children in a constructive way.

He only wants a good ruler through himself. He played Aerys against Rhaegar, someone that even Tywin and the Kingsguard as a whole were actively trying to seat on the throne over themselves. Almost everyone was on board on getting Rhaegar on the Iron Throne, with Varys being the only exception I can think of. He spun the Kingdoms into civil war and saw the almost total destruction of the Targaryen household.

Sure he wants Aegon to be a good ruler, but if Tommen was somehow Rhaegar II, then Varys would play Cersei against her own son again. He's only in it for his own self interest. He doesn't want peace unless he himself is ruling over it, exactly like Tywin, and he'd continue killing children regardless.

A bunch of people discussing game of Thrones chess piece strategies are definitely not "the cool kids."

I beieleve in the books he supports Aegon.

That's because Aegon is in all likelihood his nephew. Sure Aegon will be technically "ruling" but it's Varys who will truly pull the strings.

He smuggled out Tryion despite him knowing how big a player he is

Well, he needed Tyrion for one specific reason: Get Dany's dragons. There's no doubt in my mind that if Dany had gone off to Pentos instead of Slaver's Bay, Illyrio would have killed her and given her dragons to Aegon. He needs Tyrion to train the dragons to bring them to Westeros, and once Varys has them secured, he will kill both Dany and Tyrion. I think Tyrion suspects this though and won't allow it to happen.

quote:
tries to keep Ned alive and do some right.

He tries to keep Ned alive since his plans are not ready to come to fruition. He wants the North's armies to fight Stannis and Renly who would have him immediately beheaded and ruin his plans. The only reason he joins with Tyrion in the first place is because of Stannis, who would be the ultimate disaster to his plan. After that he's wanted the realm to fall apart so Aegon can take the throne. I do not believe Varys in the slightest that he wants to do what is right when it's implied he's a serial child killer and mutilator

This all makes a lot of sense. Just finished the books but am still a go for until I crackpot I see.

Why didn't Jon mention his relationship with Maester Aemon Targaryen?

Remember, Jon and Aemon got along pretty well. So well in fact that Aemon cast the deciding vote for Jon becoming the commander of the Night's Watch and was definitely a mentor for the young commander. (IF only Jon took the "Kill The Boy" literally, he may not have died)

Also, how awesome is it that pretty soon all three surviving Starks will be at Winterfell and both surviving Targs will be on Dragonstone.

Dany is Neesa Neesa. Her mentioning about Davos talking about Jon getting stabbed in the heart foreshadows her fate.

If we are being honest, probably because the writers forgot.

Dany probably doesn't even know who Aemon Targaryn is. She's never had a formal Westerosy education outside of her brother telling her mostly lies and I doubt he took the time to talk about her grand-uncle who surpassed the throne to join the Nights Watch.

I don't think that translation will take on a literal form. We've seen a sacrifice go terribly awry and I don't think Jon will be willing to put a sword through any innocent life (or living life for that matter)

She may die but it won't be a literal nissa nissa translation

I just read Aemon's wiki page. He was 102 when he died, his father, Maekar died in the year 233, same year that he went to The Wall. Doubt anybody even remembers who he is.

Aegon the Unlikely's ascension is very well known though, so she might know about Aemon through that, but I doubt anymore.

Yeah I don't think the Aemon connection would help

Now if he were to go "hey I'm your nephew and I wanna bang" she might be more interested

I think Dany would be interested to know that Jon was close with Maester Aemon.

I guess the writers are comatose Khal Drogos though.

If I came up to you and told you I knew your great uncle, would you be like "oh yeah cool I trust you with everything now"

Or would you be like oh that's weird, I don't even know that dude

Think that's happening this week. HBO released this picture

Somewhere in between obviously.

I think if I was someone who valued my family name and it's attendant rights and responsibilities as highly as Danny, it's something I would be interested to know. She was pretty eager to learn about her father and her brother. I'd think she'd be somewhat interested to hear about even a more distant relative. Hell, just last episode she was emphasizing that she was the last Targaryen.

It doesn't have to be forced. Jon could just say something like: I did get along rather well with the last Targaryen I knew. That should start the conversation off nicely.

Another interesting thing is that Aemon's voluntary rejection of those who thought he should be offered the crown could well be echoed by either Jon or Danny.

Jon will probably want to kill Theon and Reek will probably want to die but the Queen of Infinite Titles won't let it happen.
