When I say it couldn't be a great movie, I mean not in the sense of LOTR was.
You can't really believe that the Hobbit was as good as LOTR, can you?
It is a kid's book.

So The Hobbit is as grand and epic as Lord of the Rings?

Make no mistake, I am going to be at The Hobbit with my Gandalf hat and staff, but I was very pleased to hear Jackson and Co. were going to be bridging the cap between Hobbit and LOTR.

That makes sense and I agree to an extent. Personally, I think the Hobbit is destined for failure at the rate things are going. However, with the right people behind it, I've always felt like it had the potential to be something great. But like most great tales, it will be butchered and ruined in its journey onto the big screen. LOTR was one of those rare occasions when someone did the tale justice; The Hobbit is equally deserving as LOTR, but the way things are going it probably won't be executed as well.

Based off a thread about the books we had a while back, there were a few of us that liked the Hobbit equally as much as Lotr. I'm not going to argue that it's better with anyone bc I understand completely with those that like the trilogy better. But, the simplicity and the fact that you can just pick it up and read it at anytime gives it bonus points to me.
As far as the story goes, who cares if it's a childrens book. You have a ton of engaging main characters. Many whom just movie goers already are familiar with. Another emotional journey, Goblins, spiders, eagles, Beorn, SMAUG.... Yeah it could be as good as Lotr.

Anybody got any good replacement directors in mind? I think Alfonso Cuaron could do a good job adapting it.

The Hobbit by itself is not strong enough to be a great movie.

the hobbit is as good of a single book as any of the 3 lotr trilogy

So who could take Del Toro’s place? Not Jackson. “As for Peter directing,” writes Kamins from New Zealand, “that’s not something he can consider at this time as he has other commitments to other projects. But make no mistake, Peter and Fran’s commitment to the franchise is total and will do everything necessary to protect the films and the investment made by New Line, [parent company] Warner Bros. and MGM.” (Studio reps have not responded to requests for comment.)
Kamins says execs from New Line and Warner Bros. will be meeting with him, Jackson and Walsh this week to hammer out who will take on the job of directing The Hobbit. And until the announcement is made, why not partake in some wild speculation? I’m personally intrigued by the idea of Del Toro’s old buddy Alfonso Cuarón taking the reigns; between Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and Children of Men, he certainly knows how to pull off sweeping spectacle with deep feeling. But who do you think should take the reigns of The Hobbit? Sam Mendes? Tim Burton? Michel Gondry? Someone else? Or do you think Del Toro can never be replaced?
No Peter Jackson for director

I agree with you. I'm not saying the hobbit isn't great; because it is. But it is absolutely a kid's book compared to any of the lord of the ring's books. Bilbo's story is much simpler and the writing isn't as dense as in any of Frodo's books. It is the same quality, it is simply a lower level book.

I dont think anybody is questioning that.

Agreed.
And anyone who would say differently probably has not really read all four books.
