Battlefield Earth. Although I never read the book, movie was horrendous. Course, maybe the book is as well.
I always think of this when I see this kind of topic. The book, while long and probably should have been two books, was well written and kept me entertained. The movie...... well, I couldn't even finished the first 30 minutes.

All the King's Men - the book was too good to be translated to film; Warren's commentary made the book what it was
Which version are you talking about? I'd hardly call the first B&W one "horrible". It may not be as good as the book, but on its own terms it's a pretty good movie (it even won the Oscar as Best Picture, if that means anything).

D'ohhh I forgot about this one.
I didn't dig his Rising Sun, either. LOVED that book.

I also did not like the why Pollack changed The Firm, though the film was not horrible
+1. I was fuming when I left the theater.

DUNE
Voted Greatest Sci-Fi novel of all time--sucked onscreen. Very complex novel-poitically, character and plot-wise. Couldn't condense it into a movie. The Sci-Fi Channel did a better job in a miniseries years later.

eragon...awesome book that was squeezed unsuccessfully into an hour and a half and even left some characters out
i guess that better question would be what books were made into movies that WERE good

Which version? There've been many.
IMO the 1935 version is very good.

"Starship Troopers" took an excellent Hugo award winning SciFi novel and turned it into one of the smelliest turds ever displayed on a movie screen. Had they stayed true to the story, S.T. had the potential to be one of the greatest SciFi movies ever.
Paul Verhoeven is now dead to me for having eviscerated and then directed that POS.

"The Lords of Discipline" by Pat Conroy is one of my favorite books of all time. The movie was God awful.
