They did the best job I've ever read of explaining why I hold his job in Gilbert Grape in such high regard. As basically just a kid himself, he played a highly physical role of a retarded boy to perfection. He did it without being patronizing by making his character too lovable or endearing. He's infuriating most of the time. Too often you see an actor playing someone with sever mental disability and the take-away is they're looking for the audience to sympathize and think oh poor guy, he's so sweet, or quirky or whatever (Rain Man for instance). Instead, in Gilbert Grape you totally get that this kid is, though not intentionally, tearing this already damaged family apart and ruining Johnny Depp's life. And he is completely convincing. You aren't like "oh that's a teenage heart-throb playing a kid with mental problems". You see him and think, "there's a kid with severe developmental problems. Period". All this oohing and ahhing goes to actors who are all super-serious method men and how they "disappear" into a role. But aside from DDL, who has ever disappeared more than Leo in Gilbert Grape? And he was a kid then too!

Yeah he was fantastic in Gilbert Grape.
My favorite role of his is Blood Diamond. Just really enjoyed his character and performance. Loved the accent. Not sure if it is an "accurate" accent, but it sure did sound cool.

I re-watch Blood Diamond JUST for Leo. Aside from him, it's a pretty condescending morality sermon. But he's so interesting in that role you just can't stop watching him. I've heard his accent is actually pretty good. He's supposed to be Rhodesian, not South Afrikan, which is what a lot of people get wrong when analyzing it.

Couldn't agree more. He normally turns in solid performances, but he's never had any that transcend all the other performances in a given year. Wish he wasn't winning as a lifetime achievement award. Wish he'd give a performance that dwarfs everybody else and rightfully take home the prize then.
ETA: Best Actor shouldn't ever be given as a lifetime achievement award.

Hey, hey, hey. I love Man in the Iron Mask. I remember so getting ready to go see that and being scared and playing Jedi Knight Dark Forces

Aviator man. As good as Blanchett is, Leo is awesome as Hughes.

Man in the Iron Mask is my favorite movie of his, followed closely by Catch Me If You Can and Gangs of New York. I hated Titanic with a passion, and it soured me on Leo for years.

The Beach is under rated as frickkkkkk

Consistently good to great in his movies, but the times he's put out an Oscar-worthy performance (WEGG and The Aviator IMHO), there was just someone who was even better. So I don't think he was ever "robbed" of any Oscars as so many people like to claim.

Right. I just have no idea what a Rhodesian accent sounds like.

The Basketball Diaires is one of his best performances IMO, along with The Aviator, Blood Diamond, and Wolf of Wall Street. Yes, I know some will say he was just being Leo in wolf of Wall Street, but he nailed it regardless. Just like Denzel in training day. He's just being Denzel but it was perfect for that movie
Haven't seen Gilbert Grape, but I'll get around to it eventually as I'm a huge Leo fan. One of the few actors these days in which I'll see whatever movie he's in

Yep. Catch Me If You Can is great too. He has an amazing resume of films that stand the test of time.

If you Google "Leo Blood Diamond accent," you'll read some articles discussing how he pretty much nailed the Rhodesian accent.

I really wanted to like this. I was hoping for something a little gritty and dark, and it just wasn't that. Just felt like a Three Musketeers movie, all that was missing was the Bryan Adams/Rod Stewart soundtrack.

Even his weaker movies are good. Shutter Island, Revolutionary Road, The Aviator, and J. Edgar come to mind.
