He was asked about this and he said that the bridge got in the way of the grand battle he wanted to show on screen.

Well, William Wallace was a noble, not a commoner. There's no romance with a French noble (though Hollywood has definitely done that a lot over the years, adding a romance). There's minor things (like how kilts wouldn't be worn by the Scottish for another 400 years), One historian described it as an equivalent of watching a movie about colonial Americans wearing business suits but the wrong way around.

Other quotes:

Peter Traquair has referred to Wallace's "farcical representation as a wild and hairy highlander painted with woad (1,000 years too late) running amok in a tartan kilt (500 years too early).

Edward Longshanks is shown invoking Jus primae noctis in the film, allowing the lord of a medieval estate to take the virginity of his serfs' maiden daughters on their wedding nights. Critical medieval scholarship regards this supposed right as a myth: "the simple reason why we are dealing with a myth here rests in the surprising fact that practically all writers who make any such claims have never been able or willing to cite any trustworthy source, if they have any."

In reality, Isabella was a child and living in France at the time of the Battle of Falkirk, was not married to Edward II until he was already king, and Edward III was born seven years after Wallace's execution in 1305

There are a LOT more examples of the inaccuracies in the movie, and Gibson admitted to them but chose theatrical license to make a more compelling movie than a historically accurate one.

I don't mind that it's not accurate, but just that a lot of people see movies set during past times and just ASSUME that the director and producer were dedicated to being historically accurate. It's like that with professions too (how many times have medical procedures been demonstrated wrong, or hackers depicted as basically magic)?

If people would not take what movies showed them as absolute facts, it wouldn't be a big deal.

The scene where he confronts his son about losing the Army of the North then throwing his High Counselor/lover out the window is some of the best Patrick McGoohan since The Prisoner.

"Who is this person who speaks to me as though i needed his advice..."

one of the most cold blooded put downs in all of movie history. and then follows it up by peter panning the dude out the window. AND he bitch slaps his son for good measure. just a magnificent scene all around.

If they made that scene today, The lovers would kill Longshanks and then take turns butt fricking his corpse because muh gay power or something.

One of my all time favorites. Great cinematography! To me one of Mel Gibson's best roles.

And the way he casually says "attack" like it's the easiest and most obvious decision he's ever made. Just his voice and line delivery made that part epic

Great acting and cinematography, but holy shite is it one of the most historically inaccurate films. There were so many inaccuracies in it.

Mel Gibson needs to due an Apocalypto-style film about ancient Egypt or Ancient Greece. I would pay good money to see that.

Braveheart was great.

Dude wrote, directed and acted in the film.

Mel Gibson is the goat. Dont care if people hate him.

Apocolapto was great as well.

Want to see more films from him.

Who ever compared Braveheart to Outlaw King.

What? Really?
Dude, really?

The only thing I don't like about it is the love story between William and Sophie Marceau's character. It seems so unnecessary.

I believe that this made its way into Scottish folklore and the story that the subsequent Plantagenet kings were descendants of Wallace lingered pretty much into the present day. Absolute bullshite, but the moviemakers weren't the bullshitters. Not the original bullshitters anyway.

Probably because outsmarting the English in that instance, wasn't very hard to do. They set themselves up for slaughter. That's not as heroic or romantic as defeating the English on neutral ground with a much smaller army against "heavy horse".

The movie is incredibly historically inaccurate. If you don't know anything about the history, it's very entertaining. if you are a history seeker, then you will be disappointed.
