I would give it a solid 7 out of 10. It's not bad. Reece Weatherspoon acted her arse off. Kerry Washington almost single handily ruined it.
I was all with it until the end which just seems kinda thrown together
(spolier)
how the hell do you have that much money and don't have an alarm on your house

I couldn’t take another second of Kerry Washington, he lip quiver is unbearable.
I guess I just didn’t see the point to it. It beat you over the head with race and class issues, but never really made a point about them, they were just there. Like Izzy was super progressive and stood up to her rich white mother, and the boyfriend (who actually was a great character thinking back) stood up to Lexie for her bullshite but to what end? It wasn’t like the minority characters were treated badly, outside of Pearl, and the bad things that happened to Mia and Bebe were mostly through their own actions.
Guess I couldn’t find the greater human truth in the story and it had tons of potential for it.

I'm with you. Mia and Bebe were terrible people, certainly not people I could sympathize with.

I watched it thought it was pretty meh
I can't believe they let that Asian bitch just steal the baby back at the end
WTF they really are going to just leave the baby unattended with that crazy lady running around?

The changed the ending from the book quite a bit.

quote:This is what I didn't get. As I watched the show I felt like they were attempting to make me want to side with Bebe and Mia, but they failed pretty badly at that. They weren't sympathetic characters at all. This is the first show that I've watched since Girls where I feel like the show creators succeeded in telling a story where every character was a piece of shite.

What I truly don't understand is how we were supposed to side with the woman who left her kid outside at a fire station in the middle of winter, over a couple who have attempted to have a child for years and finally decided to adopt. The cross examination of the adoptive mother was fricking cringeworthy, and kinda pissed me off, because you know people thought that he had a valid point.

They absolutely wanted you to side against the rich white families

Kerry Washington was really bad in this.
Also, I think the husband's character is probably relatable to a lot of upper class suburban husbands.

He was fine, but he also didn’t seem to be super present while she was going through postpartum after the 4th kid. One of the minor infractions on the show though, compared to many of the others.
ETA: another absurdity of the show. They want you to sympathize with Bebe, and Mia’s argument is that Bebe is the mother because she’s flesh and blood to her daughter, but they also totally glaze over the fact that Pearl was flesh and blood of some guy in New York who Mia totally fricked over. But somehow both Mia and Bebe were right

Outside of the Bebe storyline, I thought this was another example of the “proletariat sticking it to the bourgeoisie“ in the sense that the “rich New Yorker preying on the poor small town girl to get what he wants and thinking that money can get him whatever he wants.” It failed though as they did everything they could to have Mia treated excellent. The guy met her because he was riding the subway with her, it wasn’t that he plucked her from a homeless shelter. Pearl’s father had as much of a right to know her as anyone.

Gave me something to look forward to but yikes... Mia was a shite person.: taking the couples money and running.
