Dafoe, Joaquin Phoenix, Michael Shannon. Robert Pattinson has a chance to keep moving up

Gary Oldman.
Also played Churchill in Darkest Hour, and Truman in Oppenheimer. Incredible range.

Tie between Oldman and Bale. Both guys morph into their characters they play in movies and do a hell of a job with those characters.

I would give Bale the edge.
I think one important thing is not just the skill range of the actor but their physical range. I think it’s easier to take a handsome actor and make him look like shite than the other way around. Bale can play the range of ugly to handsome very well and perhaps no one is better at adapting his physique to a role in a short period of time. Bale is also right at 6’0” so tall enough to be imposing but not so tall as to completely eliminate his effectiveness in most roles that require an average or smaller person.

It's Daniel Day Lewis, any other answer is incorrect

Robin Williams could play anything.

The answer is Gary Oldman. Christian Bale is a very close second.
The only argument is who is third place.

Very hard to argue Gary Oldman he should be everyone's #1.

A lot of good names thrown around. Stephen Root is a good one.
Is like to throw Guy Pearce's name out there.

I’ll throw Vincent D’Onofrio into the mix. Playing Pvt. Pyle and Thor back to back in the same year is still impressive.

This blew my mind. For some reason I had AIB earlier in the 80s and FMJ in the early 90s in my head. Way off.

DDL simply because he does it as a hobby and still blows mostly everyone out of the water.
