As many glowing docs & mini-docs I've seen on John Williams' catalogue of unforgettable movie scores, I had no clue about his jazz history in his early days... or his piano playing for tv shows like the Peter Gunn theme ...or Gilligan's Island scenes, not knowing I grew up already familiar his musicianship well before his movie compositions. Great & thorough documentary .

I agree. One of my biggest complaints about modern movies is their run time. This was one of the few times I could have used another 30 minutes.
I was thinking about how important music is to the overall movie experience. I think food and music both have the ability to take us back in time. If you eat something that reminds you of something from your past it's a really special experience. Music does the same thing. You shouldn't be able to re-watch a movie like Jaws because there's no real drama once you know who lives and who dies. But the soundtrack almost takes you back in time and puts you right back in your seat like it's your first ever viewing. You feel the tension of the scene even though your brain knows there is no tension. John Williams music is especially powerful in that regard.

My biggest shock was that his son was a member of the band Toto

Watched it last night. John Williams is a legend! Nobody that does what he does has ever come close to that kind of body of work. EVER! I’m so lucky to have had him score the movies of my youth. It was great seeing how awesome of a relationship he has with Spielberg. Him saying that after a long, tiring shoot filming a movie he looks forward to a week with John doing the score. It’s so true how none of these films would be what they are without Williams’s incredible music. I hope to catch one of his concerts at the Hollywood Bowl before it’s too late

The sheer amount of original music he put out seems impossible to someone like me haha I feel like i wouldve just been coming up with things similar to stuff I had already done. The Harry potter music for example is iconic and doesn't sound like anything else I've heard even though he had already been working for decades
