Agreed. Bad decision on their part. The movie would have generated enough buzz with Gosling + Martian connection.

I just bought the audio book on audible a few days ago, but haven’t started it yet. I heard it’s terrific.

Every part of it is awesome. Probably my favorite audiobook ever. Weir did a great job of making the whole story believable and getting you invested in it.

Sorry but listening to a book while playing video games or bowling is not reading

I read the Martian in anticipation of seeing the movie and then never did, but it’s a fantastic book and Weir has a great writing voice.

I may check out this book yet again in anticipation of a movie I may not see

Yes. I gave it my full attention. But I also have since read the physical copy and picked up on numerous things I missed out on listening.

This debate has been had on the book board in a 5-6 page thread. It was about a 60/40 split between those that don't consider it reading and those that do. Personally, I thought people were doing a lot of mental gymnastics trying to convince themselves it reading but it was a fun debate.

And I’m not asking you to hash it out again. If you can learn and retain in listening, which obviously you can, I think it counts. But I can absolutely see where things are missed in listening versus reading.

Yea I mean I say it more in jest than anything it's not that big of a deal. Even when I hated on audible and called it cheating before I ever tried one, it was more in jest than anything. There have been plenty I really enjoy and normally if I do it now it's one I've already read before that I want to listen to with a good narrator. But if someone asks me if I read a book and it was one I listened to on audible, I don't say I've read it, I just say I listened to it.

My daughter is pumped for this. She read the book last summer for "summer reading" for 9th grade.

This is why I alternate between audible and kindle for the same books.

I don't know how you don't spoil Rocky in the trailer. As soon as the first review comes out, Rocky would be known. He's such a big part of the story, and I think it's impossible to discuss this movie without discussing Rocky.

Driving mostly. I prefer an actual book, but i would never read anything if i waited until I had time to do that.

Those are the best times to listen to an Audiobook. Mindless and monotonous. Otherwise I can't concentrate and have to keep rewinding.

I spend 2 hours per day in my vehicle. Audiobooks are a great way to make me feel like I'm not wasting as much time. Also, they're great when, doing laundry, yardwork, or mindless data entry at work when my intern is hungover.

The movie was good but it cut out a lot of the tension from his trek across Mars and absolutely massacred the space pirate joke. Still worth a watch when you get chance. Great supporting cast, including a perfectly cast Sean Bean explaining the Council of Elrond joke.

The reported runtime for PHM after its most recent test screening is 2 hours 45 minutes so I’m hoping they don’t have to make significant cuts to the story like The Martian.

Yea I mean I listen to audiobooks, I wasn't trying to say they weren't beneficial or a good way to spend your time, I just don't consider it reading that's all. I also listen to them when cutting the grass, but I'm cutting the grass and listening to a book, I'm not cutting the grass and reading.
