A Family Thing with Robert Earl Jones.

He finds out he's half black.

Broken Trail.

Excellent little mini-series that plays in two parts, like Lonesome Dove, about every other week on the Sony movie channel. It was on there just last night. Aired on AMC too.

while not a great piece of cinematic art, Second Hand Lions is a decent family movie.

In a rare instance, having Duvall and Jones to picture as one rereads Lonesome Dove is a true gift.

My kids loved that movie. Just a fun hour and a half.

How has no one said Tender Mercies yet?

It's Duvall's sole Oscar win (what a joke), but it's never... ever on.

His top 3:

The Apostle
Apocalypse Now
Tender Mercies

What's glaring is he dwarfs Costner in that movie. It was a great movie and pairing but not flattering to Costner.

I wouldn't say that. Costner's character was written to be quiet and stand in the background... he didn't have the same presence in the movie as Duvall's character... until it was time to kick some arse.

Gus McRae Is one of the funnest, life loving characters ever created. Robert Duvall elevates Lonesome Dove from a good mini series, to one of the greatest westerns of all time.

Joe Kidd is a good early one with him and Clint Eastwood.
