I put the "X" on 3-D movies after watching A Christmas Carol. I don't get all of the hype around 3-D movies because it's not anything spectacular. Other than a few snow flakes falling in my lap during the movie, I didn't see any reason to put it in 3-D.
Just a gimmick to charge more money. No different than calling normal screens IMAX to charge more money. All gimmicks to milk us out of even more money.

give it a rest. we want to see bad-arse marines with sick technology having a bad-arse fight with aliens like starship troopers.
i don't want to see another movie about the evils of the imperialistic humans set on mining some secret/rare ore from a planet of tree hugging 'at one with nature' doe-eyed aliens who just want to be left alone.
thats been played out for a long time

so in your opinion, a five hundred million dollar 3D remake of Fern Gully is less retarded?

FWIW, I dont watch movies because the CGI is "amazing"
This movie looks retarded to me.

I didn't say whether it was or wasn't.
My contention on this thread is that it's fricking retarded to claim that this movie has some absurd "agenda" when it's quite obvious that it is about what is, and has been for a long time, human behavior. Making an observation about our "dark side" is not a problem, unless you're not comfortable with confronting that aspect of humanity.
The "shoot em up" genre is cool, I guess, if you're 15 years old. Some of us like a bit more thought in a movie.
Which brings me to Avatar. In all likelihood, I won't see it on opening weekend, primarily because I have my doubts about the current state of science fiction cinema. I'm sure that there is someone out there who CAN give us a good science fiction movie--after all, there are a shite load of good science fiction novels and short stories--but for some reason, Hollywood consistently finds a way to frick it up.
So don't give me your pseudotoughguy crap that you guys have been spewing forth. Provide a legitimate reason for trashing a movie. When you counter with, "I just want to see people shoot things and make stuff blow up," you lose credibility, in my opinion.

I think he means the story is played out, no necessarily that it's a bad one.

I would disagree here.
We are at a weird time when it comes to science fiction films. Kid movies drive movie trends now more than they did in the 80's. With the recent plethora of family fun sci fi movies, we actually do see a lot of impressive sci-fi films that come out behind the scenes.
Primer, The Prestige, Children of Men, Sunshine (minus the 3rd act), Donnie Darko, Frequency, The Matrix, Moon (just watched, totally awesome), Outlander, District 9, Cloverfield, Paprika, The Island (minus the 3rd act), Serenity, Eternal Sunshine, Minority Report...and more. All within the last 10 years.
Sci-Fi is doing fine I think. More conceptual science fiction films rather than superficial science fiction films would be the main difference.

How can they spend 100 mil on marketing?
i'd bet $100M is conservative
usually you double a movie's budget to get its estimated marketing budget + film budget

i would argue we've had far better scifi in the last 10 years than anytime before.
what books do you submit are good here? i read a ton of books (and quite a bit of scifi mixed in) so put up some books you think are better than say something like matrix, district 9, firefly, lost, etc.

Agreed. This has been a great year for the Sci-Fi genre. District 9 and Star Trek, were great films, and if this is as good as it says it will be, then this will be one of the greatest years for the genre.

This is the thing people don't realize: pretty much every film concept has been done before, which is why this is should be the rule to how films are judged: It is not WHAT the film is about, but HOW the film is about. What this film about I'm not excited in the slightest about, but I'm just interested in how the film delivers.
Up would be an excellent example of this rule, since an Old Man floating off to South America with a Cub Scout sounds like an extremely stupid concept for a film, but it is now probably my favorite Pixar film due to the amount of effort, symbolism, and delivery the film has.

This movie seems like Dances with Wolves with a ton of CGI aliens IMO

from a visual standpoint, it looks horrible. looks like half cartoon, half real gibberish
and from a thematic standpoint, what more can you do with these movies? human/american/white guy goes to kill natives who are in the way of progress. while there, he falls in love with their lifestyle (and usually one of them) and then revolts against progress/humanity/america/white people
you can't go anywhere with that
