Well, here we are on page 2. Tell us all about it, chief.

The Red Letter Media guys talk about this. How the tone and dialogue in the new Trek shows seems off. Basically the dialogue is too contemporary compared to how TNG, DS9, and the TOS were written.
The lines were written to be timeless, so someone watching a Trek show 30 years later wouldn't get the feeling that the dialogue is dated. A perfect example is from the clip I posted above. The instructor using "Oscar Wilde. I love that dude."
Imagine a character in TNG shooting a Borg and saying "Cowabunga dude!"
Also, these new Trek shows have the same problem that the Marvel movies have, where everything has to be quirky and quippy instead of being serious and stoic with occasional levity.

We'll stay for a second episode. Didn't have time to watch it with the first.
The Doctor and his protégé are probably the best things going on this series. Expanding his role so that he's the Data of this series was a wise choice.
Giamatti as Khan/Mudd/Beetlejuice is gold.
Hunter is passable as the Captain, but her curling up in the Captain's chair like Jiminy Glick is extremely annoying.
Other than the painfully slow opening storyline, my main beefs are with the relentless subverting of expectations and so many main characters being unique. The first this, the only that, the sensitive and scientific Klingon and the Klingon/Jem'Hadar with the wry sense of humor. Seems like the writers are padding their choices in case they get more than one season.
I'd complain about the cadets having to save the ship on the first trip out, but that was a given from the start.
And I should probably hate the main cadet character but he's the most traditional Star Trek personality on the ship. Stands up for his friends, cuts corners, a young Kirk.

You’re gonna have to look to other posts to get a full review. I could not endure much past the first five minutes of episode one. Why? The initial premise of single mom and her kid, no dad in sight or mention, is supposed to illicit strong heart warming feel feels.
Problem is, both of them are in a holding cell, by themselves, awaiting for mommy to be sentenced for the crime of aiding in abettin in the robbery of a Federation ship which had… Food! Yep. Mommy and child are so destitute that they had to somehow hook up with a well-known “pirate“ who felt that she would be the perfect partner in crime. Does she have a background with working for this guy? Is she a freelance criminal? Don’t know! ( In famous Drinker voice). All I know is that someone from the Federation died and she is getting “separated“ from her child. Oh my stars not that!
Yes, because in the 32nd century, when somebody does a crime whether they have a child or not, they have to go to prison. (picking up any current day comparisons to anything?)
These people literally cannot help themselves.
So mommy and pirate guy get sentenced and the little kid becomes the “Ward of the Federation “. They acted as if that was a fate worse than death. Didn’t say for how long either, she clearly wasn’t given a life sentence. But from the scenes we saw the kid literally has no other family, but mum. Again, dad might’ve went out for a pack of space cigarettes, we don’t know.
So they’re telling us that in the 32nd century child services has gotten no better? Great.
Then we fast forward to 15 years later, where the judge has resigned from her job simply because she followed the law. Like she hadn’t done that before, but this time the one time that she separated, a child from his mother wrecked her so much that she had to walk away. Only she describes it as resigning in disgrace. Which makes no sense at all. But she has to turn her virtue signal up to 27 or something so that the plot can be firmly established.

Yeah, they definitely rage bait but this was about Nerdrotic's experiment where his live stream of a Spock action figure sitting in a chair got almost three times more live viewers than the SFA YouTube premiere.
That's how much they have crushed this brand and how little enthusiasm their absurd pre-released scenes sparked.

I'm not sold on the chancelor. I just don't get her motivation. And she's 420? I guess Tig is older but she went through that time warp or whatever i didn't watch Discovery.
I see saying Tigs speech wasnt DEI didn't go over well here but I stand by that. She simply was telling Mir to get to know his classmates.
I really do not like the hologram student. I like the doctor being back. But he had a purpose. Why create a hologram just to go to school?
The "klingon with emotion" hasnt been too bad other than he watches birds. Obviously Mir is the main character and he's not bad but gets annoying at times.
I didn't see anything that makes me want to just turn it off and i don't have many shows to watch right now besides Fallout and Landman so I'll stick with it.
I still prefer the style of SNW. There are some dumb things. I didn't really see much lesbian stuff other than two dyky crew members. The heavy set liason got a lot of attention from angry YouTubers but she had maybe 1 minute of screen time. Also i can totally see a Jem Hadar boning a Klingon. So that character doesn't bother me as much as it bothers others.
I do admit the first 10 minutes of episode 1 were dumb. The whole ship out of control and prison guards beating a prisoner were dumb.

quote:I prefer the tech of SNW's era. There's so much shite* going on with the shows set in Academy's timeline that it's a huge distraction. The Giamatti hologram conversation on board the Athena was a bit much. You miss one note of dialogue and you're wondering why the episode's villain is suddenly on the bridge.
I still prefer the style of SNW.
*flying robots, holographic touch screens, etc.
The more that I think about it, as much as SNW's writers bend the original series bible, the restraints of technology from that era keep it from going into the absurd.

Except for the fact that Jem’Hadar aren’t able to reproduce.

Jem'Hadar were generated in birthing chambers or hatcheries. Their growth cycle was accelerated such that they reached full maturity only three days after emergence. They did not procreate naturally, and their species consisted solely of males.

They were all male. It says they didn't procreate naturally not that they couldn't. Also maybe things changed in 1000 years.

A lot of shows give the first episode free.

Totally agree. Its an overload. I get its way in the future but it's a lot. I really want a show in the Enterprise Timeline. Id rather see the actual first class of Starfleet rather than whatever this is. Maybe a show about the founding of the Federation. Start off with United Earth and maybe bring Bakula and Jolene Blalock back.

It's not a case of "it's so bad we have to give it away on YouTube." It's Paramount thinking that the first episode is good enough to draw in subscribers. They did the same with the Strange New Worlds premiere, then followed up by putting the first season on YouTube to get people to subscribe for the second and third seasons.

Apparently it does, considering the Cheron were all killed off in their civil war in the original series

I caught a scene of what I'm guessing is a future cadet, he was cuffed and being transported in a ship to, ostensibly, some prison. There is a pilot and two guards, within the first few seconds one of the guards mouths off some sort of aggressive comment like "you alive or dead". In that instant I knew how the scene would play out:
-guards would get needlessly physical because trope
-cuffed and seemingly dazed criminal would somehow beat the frick out of two armed guys who are twice his size, at the same time, and then beat the frick out of the pilot as well once he joined in the fray because... misunderstood bad boy trope
-possible craft problem, bad boy will also be lucky/omgbestevar pilot and survive
And sure enough, that's what it ended up being.
