I’ve said since day 1 they should have given the Late Show to Conan after Dave retired. It would have been a great story of two guys who were a screwed by Jay Leno. Giving it to Colbert never made any sense.

I've never found Colbert funny. Conan is probably my all time favorite.

I was always surprised that they could have 4 identical shows on 4 channels at the same time slot. I guess the standard for minimum ratings has changed quite a bit in recent years.

Even back in the glory days of the Tonight Show (1965-1995) there was only room for one seat at the table and nobody was going to bump Johnny Carson out of it. Every competitor failed, even with a long leash. And this was during a time when there were only four TV stations and no other late night forms of entertainment. Your choice was sleep, watch Johnny Carson or watch paint dry.

That should tell you something about the market for late night talk shows.

I've long suspected that these shows are losing lots of money in the modern marketplace. The numbers just don't make sense. They have the same number of eyeballs as cat videos on Youtube but they can support a high paid host, a huge production staff, all of the facilities, etc..? And let's not forget that Colbert had an additional headwind - Letterman's production company, Worldwide Pants, still owns and controls a piece of that show so that's a legacy mouth feeding at the trough.

I think the pivot towards left wing political messaging was partly personal narcissism but also partly a move to hedge off economic scrutiny. These late night hosts can say, "sure we're losing millions of dollars every year but we're doing the lord's work attacking Trump and Republicans every night on broadcast TV!" Considering BILLIONS are spent on political campaigns, PACS, political organizations, etc. and Democrats get a big chunk of that from the entertainment industry, is it really crazy to connect the dots and say these shows morphed into a form of backdoor political contributions?

Conan was one of the most likeable guys in the industry but he didn't play that game and he got yanked for just having stagnant profits and audiences. And you're telling me there's a reason to have Seth Meyers and his audience of 300,000 angry librarians and crazy people on a network timeslot every night?

Likely has to do with his and the producers' contracts. Also, they still need to fill the air time. The network probably wants time to get their ducks in a row.

That might be why his show is falling first, Colbert interviewing politicians and political analysts doesn't appeal to most people, the other shows seem to have a better track record of producing viral clips.

The irony of Colbert announcing on his show that it was getting cancelled last night, and then immediately introducing that his next guest was Adam Schiff was almost too ridiculous to be believable.

he's never been funny.

And might actually be worse than the limey who's show is on HBO.

No doubt about it. The "correct" political messaging on network late night shows brought in just enough ad revenue from large corporations to justify their continued existence. An entertaining show and actual viewership became secondary.

However, it has been reported that Colbert has faced a growing shortage of advertisers recently. Like you said, the numbers don't make sense at that point, especially in Paramount's financial position.

I'm sure Kimmel, Fallon, and Meyers are facing the same lack of sponsorship. The Tonight Show was cut to 4 nights a week last year, and the live band on Meyers' show was fired. But Disney and NBCUniversal can afford the losses right now. Paramount can't.

:You're fired....in ten months. By then any talented writers will have left for other jobs, and the rest of the crew will have entered either massive states of depression or become so bitter that they won't even keep the camera lens clean.
Ten months: only elephant gestation takes longer. 18-22 months.
