Apocalypse is way... Way, way up there. Probably top 3.

The best is likely Network. Probably the best written script since Casablanca, or maybe ever.

Also have to throw in Pulp Fiction.

I feel like Godfather I and/or II should be there, too.

Maybe Unforgiven for a Western, but it's a rung below.

It's not in that tier knowl, but Get Shorty is one of the bettwr written and executed screenplays of the last 30+ years that gets no respect.

I mean, Elmore Leonard co-wrote it... So there's that.

It should have easily been nominated for an Oscar, but light comedy/drama doesn't really get much respect from the Academy.

And dot anyone shitting on Apocalypse. The Kilgore scenea alone are worthy of consideration.

The ending is a mess but the rest is not. Especially considering it was labeled as an 'impossible' script to write based on Hearts of Darkness. Millius is an immortal screenwriter.

Man that script is so tight and flows so damn well even with how erratic the pace can be.

What do you consider “modern movie history?” Apocalypse now is like 45-50 years old. How far back are we allowed to go?

If by perfect, you mean unfinished, made up the night before a scene, shooting roles of film and actors just saying different things retake after retake of whatever pops into their mind?

"I like to shoot a 9-hour movie because you never know what shot or dialogue will work. The movie is actually made in the editing room." - Francis Ford Coppola

I would never pick a Director who has no clear vision or structure with a malleable script always in the works while shooting.
