trailer
I'd never heard of this movie until reading about it on another forum. The only streaming service that had it was some app called Mubi on prime, so I checked it out.
Really enjoyed it. Its an adventure that takes place in the early 1900s. The biggest thing I came away with was that it's possibly the most beautifully filmed movie I've ever seen. Absolutely gorgeous.
I did a little reading about it afterwards, and apparently it was a huge ordeal to film; tons of locations, took years, expensive. Yet it only made 4 million in theaters. There's something weird about how it wasn't released in a lot of theaters, and then afterwards, up until now on Mubi, you couldn't find the movie anywhere.

Agreed it's a very well filmed movie, really colorful with nice visuals. It's been a number of years since I've seen it so I don't really remember any of the plot details but I remember liking it.

Brilliant movie. One of the most underrated of all time maybe. I loved it. I don't need to see recognizable stars in movies. Give me quality actors and spend the rest on making the movie look beautiful like this one.

The 4K bluray community has been begging for a transfer of this for years, so it's cool to see that it finally came to fruition. I'm awaiting the physical release

But why has it been like this? I don't get it, tons of people clamoring for it, it didn't make much money on its original go...why keep it in hiding for 18 years?

it's been in licensing/distribution hell for years and hasnt been available for streaming or purchase anywhere. used copies of it were going for a lot of money. I guess they figured out who owns the rights and were able to get the ball rolling

I have it on blu ray. It is an amazing movie visually

Beautiful film. The scenes between Pace and the girl work well. What fell short for me was the fantasy characters. They weren't well developed enough for me to really care about. It would have been even more disastrous for the box office take, but the movie should have been about 45 minutes longer to focus on the supporting cast.
