It will be hard to translate to the big screen, though.
How so. I think it's rather easy.

From what I remember, the trailor alludes to that. which is disappointing
After watching the trailer again, I think that is Martinez's wife and kid. Additionally in a marketing short they did, no actual scenes from the movie were used, he broadcast a message to his mother and father, no lady friends.

because you have a bozo like matt damon. i havent read the book, but ive heard great things from many respected opinions. after watching the first trailer, i was disappointed to see matt damon and his goofy voice say lines like "gotta science the shite out of this"

I have read the book. Twice. I first heard about it on an NPR interview, which discussed how the book is hard science fiction, meaning that much of the movie relies on science known to us now (as opposed to science fiction). I've watched all the trailers and I am excited for the film's release (October 2). I plan to watch it in IMAX. The trailers look like the film nails it.

I just saw the extended trailer for this and it looks great. Sounds like I should grab the book from the comments in the thread.

I loved the book, but I also agree it will be difficult to translate to a movie. I found the tech stuff incredibly interesting, but Idk how it would play in a movie.
I also don't have the slightest clue how they will film the last ~20 mins of the movie. The final sequences are gonna be incredible if done well.
Sidenote: Glad I'm not the only one who found this book hilarious. My idiot brother said "yea I thought it was ok, but the humor attempts were painful". I didn't know WTF he was talking about. I loved the one-liners.

Just realized that Ridley Scott is the director.
Given some of his recent films, is this a good thing?

Haven't read the book but the trailer was very underwhelming.

Read the book on a lazy Saturday afternoon, its such a quick read. Should be an awesome movie-- the two biggest challenges are going to be translating the boredom and getting the humor right. Also the whole "Castaway" challenge I mean for at least 75% of the run time its a man alone but with the added benefit/problem of voiceover and without the sheer beauty of the Tropics (Mars could be awesome but remember most of the time he's in the hut.)

I mean I'd point to "Gravity" but that was made with a lot more care and planning than this will be-- think a more modern Apollo 13. (Gravity was a lot like Avatar or Citizen Kane in that a ton of the shots and techniques were invented to shoot the film).

getting the humor right
I like Matt Damon but idk how I feel about him playing this role. The humor is what made Watney's character for me and I'm not sure how I feel about him pulling it off.
