But even movies like Dances with Wolves were met with retroactive hate.

It's really like he did something to piss off "the media"

Postman was just okay. Definitely was a bit long and slow at times.

Waterworld is awesome though. I remember hearing about how it was the biggest flop of all time and shite back in the day, but looking at the figures, it made almost $100 million over its budget at the box office. So throw in rentals, VHS/DVD, and TV and it likely made a good bit of money.

Not a good movie.

I'm a David Brin fan. I was looking forward to this movie when it came out, but overall, it was very disappointing.

@CDawg David Brin is a great author. If you are into scifi at all, I suggest reading the Uplift series.

IMO, he doesnt fit the mold of what "experts" consider a good actor and his films arent "The English Patient" like.

Like I said, I like 90% of Costners movies. They do what I want movies to do, entertain me.

Didn't Costner direct Postman? I kept laughing to myself at the absurd sex scene that was in the movie, like he got bored and decided to throw one in there for himself.

The Postman is a watchable movie. Nothing great or terrible about it to me.

I don't buy Will Patton as the leader of a rogue army and parts of the movie are really hokey. I can watch it if nothing better is showing.

The bad part about Waterworld for me was Dennis Hopper's character. It was very cartoonish(that's not a word?) and hard to pull against. Was silly and not a very good villain.

Dances With Wolves beat out Goodfellas for best picture and racked over $400 million worldwide at the box office.

ETA: But I see the "retroactive" hate argument.

Yeah, I was about to say, that movie was the English Patient of its day - you couldn't avoid the media telling you to worship it.

I didn't mind it too much, but it was a bit long. And the ending with the statue was really cheesy. IMO, Ford Lincoln Mercury did more to start the "movement" than Kevin Costner's character.

I think most people find it a bad movie.

I somewhat enjoyed it though.

Likewise. I find myself drawn to both whenever they are rerun. Jeanne Tripplehorn and Oliva Williams alone are worth the price of admission.

One of the biggest problem with the movie was that it was way too long. 177 minutes, are you kidding me?

I rather enjoyed The Postman. Like another poster mentioned, however, I'm also really into the post-apocalyptic genre.

The Postman is an interesting failure. There's lots of things to recommend it, especially Will Patton's performance. I wouldn't go as far as to say I liked it but it certainly isn't worthy of the hatred directed at it.

Waterworld, OTOH, is in the conversation for worst movie ever made. It's a flaming pile of shite. It has no redeeming qualities other than as a cautionary tale.

I think many of Waterworld's failures were due to the production and bad misfortunes like a hurricane hitting their special sea set in Hawaii. They had setback after setback. Then It seemed everybody involved with the project wanted to be the chief instead of a brave. This is when it seemed Costner's was starting to receive this backlash.

Waterworld is like Mad Max on water. That's about it. Not a bad movie in receiving as much ridicule as it did but certainly not a great movie.

A little interesting tidbit about Costner and Waterworld.

For some reason Kevin Costner went about 10 years or so with every critic trashing his movies. He must have done something to piss off the media machine.

Madonna deemed him "uncool" in her Sex documentary.
