I question your critical thinking skills if you think bells are what did the trick.

You can know it's coming and still be mad it's happening

Her following was made up of former slaves and horse frickers skilled in killing people. Let's not pretend she was winning people over with her kindness.

Her “devoted followers” are a few thousand soldiers and savages, plus one northerner

Honestly, when the bells started ringing, I was half-expecting them to play "The Reigns of Castemere", the camera to pan to a closeup of Cersie's face with a bemused smirk, Jon looks nervous as he sees the green smoke rising, we hear a rumbling, Jon screams "FALL BACK, NOW!!!!" and the whole city outside of the Red Keep explodes killing massive numbers of Lannisters, civilians, and Dany's armies who have at this point all made it inside the walls. That would have been classic Game of Thrones. Right when you think everything is going well, a massive deadly twist that is in line with the characters' past and what not. You could even have had Jamie stumble upon the Wildfire while trying to go through the tunnels. This would lead him on the path to absolutely kill Cersie, with him meeting her at the same time as the Clegane Bowl. She could think he's there to rescue her, but he arrives to kill her only to be done in by the Dragonfire.

Dany then takes Drogon and flies straight to the Red Keep only for there to be one scorpion left manned by Qyburn who manages to knock Dany's dragon out of the sky, but not kill it. The Dragon crash lands at the foot of the keep in front of the tens of thousands of civilians who are shouting at Dany, believing she's the one who was torching the city. Dany, then seeing the angry crowd closing in, screems "Dracarys!" and kills the civilians and begins blasting the Red Keep to smithereens.

People that shoot up schools feel like everyone has left/betrayed them and they're alone. Dany's inner circle did just that. It's basically her and Grey Worm, and the person she loves is a direct threat to her biggest goal in life. Going mad should be expected.

Ok, she just suppressed all of her emotions until she actually won. Like I said, I could see if it she goes scorched earth from the beginning or during the battle. She wins and then decides to torch a million innocent people. Flip switched. Jamie screws Brienne. Flip switched.

I also don't get Tyrion turning on Varys at all. That's something else that didn't make sense.

My issue isn't that she went mad, it's WHEN she went mad. There's no reason to go mad when everyone is surrendering.

Uhhh, that's why it's called going mad. I don't understand this board sometimes.

Rushed rushed rushed. Buzzword of the season so far. Bonus points if you can use it in a sentence with "lazy".

It’s a legit critique especially after the news that HBO was willing to do more episodes.

I didn’t start watching the show until last summer, and I figured it out around season 4.

It’s not like this should have been a surprise to anyone

That's one of the very few issues I had. I haven't read a good case for it, but on the surface it was surprising.

It’s been hinted. When Jon confessed her reaction sold it for me.

Some parts here and there were rushed, but I read two weeks of criticisms that the first two episodes didn't move the plot enough too, so forgive me if I think many are criticizing just for shits and giggles.

Going Mad usually implies being pushed towards the edge and then going WAY over that edge. The way the battle was going, the tension and doubt was gone. There's literally no reason to go mad at that moment. If the battle was still somewhat in doubt or some of the surrendering men were being defiant or the peasants were insulting her, then her going mad and deciding to just roast everything makes sense. In the moment, it just felt forced.

I was fine with her going mad, but the show did a very bad way of "triggering" her madness. They did a great job at setting up the possibility of her going mad and establishing her nature and motivation. They just missed on the final straw that breaks the camel's back.

Same here. They were two of the most level headed characters in the story. And in the end Varys was right, so Tyrion ratting him out was the wrong move. Maybe he latched on to Dany so hard due to her taking him in and trusting him, where he was pretty much an outcast everywhere else.

Your looking for reason in madness... that is a mistake... Madness is not rational by its very nature...

She is going mad because
1) Jon
2) betrayal
3) stress of loss of those close to her...
4) we have seen glimpses of this in her story previously...

I agree with most people when they accuse the writers of "rushing" the story and so forth..

Rushing it makes for a different kind of viewing experience with GOT than what we have been accustom to...

Having said that... While I am disappointed with the "rush"... I have enjoyed the season so far... I have simply had to adjust my expectations because of the rush to the finish line...

yeah, but her glimpses of Madness were always when she was backed against a wall. She wasn't in this episode...at all. She had won. She literally just decided to torch everyone for zero reason. You can't blame that on madness. That's lazy writing.

You dildos collectively predicted every possible variation of outcome, at one point or another.

I've been in these threads for the better part of a decade. Sure, it was mentioned, along with literally thousands of other theories.

No one is an idiot for not predicting it and those whose 10,000 predictions included it certainly aren't geniuses.

It’s baffling

Dany has been getting off on the deaths of others since season 1. She mentally fapped to her brother getting his head melted right in front of her and publically crucified hundreds of men as a show of force, but people were surprised she burned down a city which represents the greatest insult to her a her family’s legacy?
