The ratings are thru the roof:

On its face, “The Walking Dead” would seem a hard sell to viewers, with its gory flesh-eating scenes and its comic-book roots. But when the first episode was shown on Halloween, it instantly ranked as the most watched scripted series in the history of cable television among 18- to 49-year-olds, a demographic courted by advertisers and by AMC.

The fact that there were almost no zombies in this episode and it was great shows how good this show is.
But...
With only 6 episodes to watch, I wanted more from the going back into Atlanta story line in this episode.
Were there 12 or 13 episodes, I wouldn't have minded the other story lines, but with 6 I'm looking at the stop watch.

I wish the black dude has just thrown him the hack saw, and they could have just avoided the whole subplot. They're wasting a lot of time with just six episodes.

Great episode...well except for the very end. Why in the frick would he use the hacksaw to cut off his own hand instead of the cuffs?????

Because he had gone crazy by that point.

I see not being able to saw through the hand cuffs, but that rust old pipe he was hand cuffed to? Also, why did it take him so long to think about getting the hacksaw. In the initial episode they made it a point to show the black guy knocking over the bag of tools with saw in it. Would have been the first thing I would have thought of. Keep repeating to myself...."it's just a TV show, it's just a TV show"

Because he didn't have time, with the zombies closing in, to cut through the metal handcuffs?
Cutting through his own flesh is faster?
Reminds me of that scene from Mad Max. Same concept.

This was my least favorite episode. Almost like it was a necessary "bridge" to connect the first two episodes and help lead into the last few.
I think the action of the first two spoiled me, though. I just found this one boring.

I think he was trying to get to it before and might've given up. Notice how his belt was already off and lying over ther when he went to try?
Good episode, maybe by season's end both gangs of survivors will join up? I hope we don't have to wait till August 2011 for the 2nd season.

I'm 99% pos. you can't cut through handcuffs with a hack saw. FWIW
Edit. I didn't think about cutting through the pipe.

About cutting the handcuffs vs the hand.
Why didn't he just cut throught the rusty bar the hand cuff was cuffed to. Less dramatic I guess?
Edit: Didn't see the post 2 up about the pipe

Finally caught up on the series.
agreed,the wife is a ho
the Zombies with rocks in the 2nd episode was corny
Leaving the guy on the roof was great, going back to get him is stupid.
This gang of survivors next episode will definitely lead to some trouble
I am loving this show so far

I really liked the episode even without all the zombie carnage. I'm not letting myself get caught up in the whole cutting his hand off thing. Enjoy the show too much for that.
*****SPOILERS******
I am really hoping Glen doesn't get killed in the next episode. In the previews, it looked like he might get cornered and when the new guys reveal themselves, it looks like its just the sheriff and Boondock.

Last nights episode was just sheer greatness.
SPOILERS:
frick I HATE SAYING THAT.
anyway, Damn, I didn't really expect his partner to be such a dirt bag. I mean apparently he didn't even go back to check for his friend at the hospital and not only just assumed he was dead, but either wished he really was or didn't give enough of a frick to check just because of his ulterior motives i.e fricking his best friends wife. And I know he had the resources and capability to go back and check for his buddy before they made their escape. He just didn't want to.
How did White Supremacist guy aka Rowdy Burns get off the roof? I'm guessing he somehow cauterized the wound after he cut off his wrist due to the lack of blood. He seemed like he was getting his wits back plus pissed off at the world just after he said his little prayer and saw those tools. No question he's off the deep end now regardless. If he's still alive, there is no talking him down or apologizing. Someone is gonna pay for leaving him, or their gonna have to kill him. And his brother.
Probably being too nitpicky but I was kind of wondering why they have light discipline at the camp? I mean I thought these zombies only heard loud noises and smelt shite. It didn't seem like they could see anything and if they did, not real well. Usually they'll stare at the humans for a while before it seems like they recognize them, and that's because they smell them. If they are off in the distance, I don't see how a glimmering light would attract them since they supposedly aren't cognizant and can't use their brains. I mean lets pretend a car is on fire from the aftermath in the city, are they really gonna all swarm to it?
Nice to see the dirtbag partner whip the other dirtbag(wife beater)'s arse. I was hoping the women would gang up and beat the frick out of him though.
The Vibrator bit was awesome. Nice to see AMC not editing the frick out of this show. Lots of things on here make you forget this is a regular cable network. I mean non HBO or Showtime.
So excited to see next weeks episode. Definitely gonna be drama with the humans. The human element is emerging as way scarier than the zombies. Probably lots of bands of criminals and shite all over the place laying low. Probably not a lot of humanitarians survived that thing(the zombie apocalypse) like our hero and his fellow campers. They are gonna run into all kinds of trouble, and still have to worry about Rowdy Burns and his brother. And I'm sure the wife beater isn't gonna forgive the other cop so easily, he'll be looking to shank him in his sleep.

I took all of this into account too. I'm gonna assume that he was only on the roof for a day or less, probably most of it being in the sun. It made it look like he was up there for a week, but I mean the actual timeline is really just them leaving him, and making it back to the camp within an hour or so. He spent at least one night up there, but I'm thinking the zombies were knocking trying to force through the door the same day, then he realized he has to do something. He prob tried to saw off everything and eventually just said frick it and took off his arm. Again, I'm assuming he tried other options but for some reason or another it had to come down to his arm. He seemed to be just pissed, not totally stupid when he went for the tools.
Also I think he made this decision the same day they left him. He probably spent that night doing whatever it was he did to get off the roof. Maybe a fire escape?????
I do know that if it's summer in Atl and he's up on the roof from sun up to sun down with no water, that's more than enough time to succumb to exposure. You could have 3rd degree sun burns within a few hours and the dehydration would be driving you bat shite crazy by mid to late afternoon.
