quote:where did I say an artist zhoupdmt try something new? Idc if they do or not but dont reward someone for a shitty project. I could film a pile of dogshit for 2 weeks while it rots and some of you would watch it and call it groundbreaking art. That's what raging bull was by the way, dogshit.
So you're saying that creativity has no value. Having the guts and ingenuity to try something new should always be applauded when it comes to art. It is so hard not to be derivative and boring that even breaking out of that is an accomplishment. I don't want to live in a world where artists are too scared to fail to try new ideas.
Also, keep in mind that you are saying that you can criticize a movie for having an idea that you think is uninteresting, but I can't credit a movie for doing something new that I think is interesting. When we're talking about the exact same feature and idea.

To each his own. There are plenty of super hero movies with CGI explosions for you to watch.

I'm pretty surprised by this reaction myself. It was dumb.
To the poster who said this doesn't rely on jump scares, that's just patently false. When the sexy witch grabs the kid by the head and it's her gnarled witch hand. When the witch is drinking blood from the goat teat. The crow eating the mother's nipple. When Black Phillip kills the father. All jump scares. Still scary but let's not pretend this move was something it's not.

There's a concept to it. You wanted a more contemporary mainstream horror movie. It isn't that, and it isn't trying to be that.
Everything in this post is wrong. It could have been a cool concept if they had just made it about Puritan fears. But the goat really IS the devil, there IS a witch living in the woods, she DID steal the baby. If the family had all killed each other over unfounded fears, THAT would have been scary. This is just a contemporary mainstream horror movie with the witch as the villain.

Simple answer, they are smarter then you.

You completely missed the point. It’s a movie that illustrates how someone would become a witch. The little girl is The Witch. Evil slowly destroyed everything in her life until she had no place to turn other than a coven of witches

I just watched The Witch after several people raved about it in the Anya Taylor-Joy thread. I really enjoyed the creepiness. This is the type of horror I like. I had to use subtitles though.
I found three threads on The Witch, two OPs were negative about it, and one OP was positive. I replied to a negative-OP thread because I think Peazey nails it:
At the end of the film it says much of the dialog came directly from period sources such as journals, diaries, and court records. All of the concepts, such as a witch in the form of a hare, the devil in the form of a goat, came directly from period writings. This is a horror movie for a 17th century audience.

The scene with the father's monologue where he eats dirt is an acting masterclass by Ralph Ineson.

Started listening to season 1 of the Unobscured podcast about The Salem With Trials and it really puts into focus what people believed in back then. Will definitely watch this again after I finish the season.

I thought the movie was great but I didn’t find it scary at all

not only that but it went a step further and validated those fears
This. Only thing I’d add is that it was told as a Puritan would tell another Puritan. The full title is The Witch: A New-England Folktale. The scariest thing to them wouldn’t be the witch, the goat, or even the devil himself. It would be that all those things came for the family, but God didn’t protect them.

You'll never convince the folks that love this movie (or Hereditary, or practically any A24 flick) that they aren't morally superior to you for liking this film. It's a badge of honor for them that they enjoyed it.

People can like whatever they want to like. Not hating on that. I mean, you can eat sonic for every meal and live in a trailer too, and I'm not hating on that either.
