Toby is really getting shafted. He's financially supported his family the entire time. Kate plays with kids all day for a joke of an income.

Toby SHOULD have mentioned the offer. But the fact that it came "2 weeks ago" & was a drop in salary makes it a non-issue.

It's Kate's fault she took over 2 decades to figure her life out. There are consequences to sucking. There are rewards for busting your arse to improve your life. Toby is getting a raw deal.

Also, if Kate would just move to SF & walk that hill 2x/day = she'd drop 100 lbs. in 3 months!

I'm surprised at the reactions of some of you on this ep.

Me and Mrs. Tyger watched it last night and both of us hate Kate even more now.

Mrs. T couldn't believe how ungrateful Kate was for ALL the stuff Toby did for her. She said "I'd have been really happy that he had done all that upfront work and helped minimize the stress that happens when considering moving or buying a house. Even all the effort he put in to planning their day."

She also said "Driven, successful men who are working to better themselves are sexy as hell."

When Toby describes the "Old Toby" that Kate was missing, he nailed exactly what Kate's whole life has been. A sad sack that used every excuse available, primarily her dad's death, to cover for her own miserable self esteem and attitude.

We both loved it when Toby hit her with the facts about who he was now and how he was thinking about the future of the family.

And what's really frustrating is that he wasn't being the stereotypical emotionally absent financial bankroll type father figure. He truly WANTS to be an active part of his family's lives.

And in return, Kate makes a face like she just bit in to a rotten tuna sandwich, and attacks him.

frick her.

Yes, she loves her job. And yes he should have talked to her about the LA job offer and the idea to buy the house. But that's not shite you end a marriage over.

Yet after she trundles up the hill, she makes a decision to do exactly that.

It took all my will power (because Mrs. T doesn't like me to say terrible things) not to yell out loud "Now turn around and try to walk back down that hill fatass!".

Neither of us enjoyed this episode, and we certainly have no more like or sympathy for Kate.

When it was done, I asked "What was the message of this week's episode?"

What were they trying to say?

The best I can come up with is "Kate's feelings and sense of self is more important than her husband or family's. Because she's been a miserable lump her whole life with almost zero drive, and let every negative thing that happened her completely shut down any aspirations, and now, all of a sudden, when she has happiness, and one more road block appears, it's TOTALLY fine for her to NUKE everything because she suddenly climbed a hill and felt a modicum of self worth.

The wife also noticed that at the end of the episode they DARE not have the actors come on with a PSA about the dangers of obesity and programs and organizations like Weight Watchers that one can reach out to for help.

The Fats are the new Third Rail.

I pretty much agree with everything you wrote. I'm not sure who seems to like Kate. I think the message is that she's wasted 20 years not really doing anything. To me it was the comparison between her lack of growth to Toby's fabulous journey. I mean who wouldn't like Toby. I hate it when anything makes working hard, sometimes long, and liking your job a bad thing. I do think that Toby might have made more of an effort to clear his schedule, but it appears to me he might be with a tech start up and that's kind of life with a start up. Hard and lots of work because you're growing and therefore never have enough people. But it's so much fun.

Maybe the point at the end is that Kate finally realized that she can actually do something and has found something she loves? I think walking up the hill was symbolic of her finally saying to herself, "I can." It was her saying she's chosen her. But in my mind, she's still chosen Kevin and Rebecca. Kate and Kevin both need to learn to live alone and be grown ups.

I should not have feelings of anger towards a 6/7 year old actor, but even the youngest Kate has me wanting to push her down. Like her Junior Butterball arse wouldn't have floated like a beach ball if she'd let go of Jack in the pool. C'mon...

It takes maximum effort to sweat through a denim jacket, to be sure.

I legit thought for a second that they were going to have her experience her mountaintop moment, then drop dead where she stood.

Would've cheered, too.

Can you imagine the thermonuclear shite fit of white-hot righteous indignation that the Healthy At Any Size crowd would pitch? They'd stampede.

Without a doubt!

It's hilarious to me that the segment of the population that is the most reactionary in regards to the COVID scare absolutely refuses to acknowledge the comorbidity of obesity in regards to the virus.

Wear a mask!!

Get vaccinated!!!

Get boosted!!

Social distance!!!!

What about "lose some weight, eat right and exercise!!!" No fricking way they will say that.

I was so mad at Rebecca and Jack during both Kevin and Kate's pool scenes. Maybe things are different in Pennsylvania where you can't swim for much of the year. Maybe there are many pools. But I was really mad that they let their kids quit swim lessons. Almost everyone has had a child want to quit something. I've never let mine just up and quit in the middle of a session. They had to finish. It's a big lesson they need to learn.

I also thought it was just horrific that their 6-7 year old kids were almost afraid of the water. Why didn't you take them to the pool when they were younger? Maybe it's me and living on the Gulf Coast/in the South where we have tons of pools and lakes and beaches. I felt swimming was a huge safety issue and my kids were good swimmers at 6/7.

The way Jack and Rebecca handled all of that just really irritated me.

They handled it like some parents of today. Not parents of the 80s or 90s.

I can still see the pool in my head where I learned to swim. A lady who taught on the side in her own pool at home. 7-10 kids. Nearly all crying to start.

What they HAVE to get to at some point is the JOY that these people ever had in their lives. Rebecca is going to die so that’s the climactic downer. Unless they go all religious and afterlife like Lost and Rebecca meets Jack and Miguel (if he dies) in the Beyond. They have to flash back to when their lives had joy. Miguel and Rebecca marrying. Though the kids frick that up I’m sure.

Randall’s wedding? Their kids birth.

“Life sucks, you lose much, then you die” can’t be the message of the series.

I'm really glad aboht where they've taken Kate's character in the back half of the show. She was my absolute least favourite character for a long time, but since about s5, I've been enjoying her a lot more. I actually root for her now.

Just re-watched this scene.

Toby says "You know what I'd like to say to old Toby? He was a mess. He was miserable, and insecure, and self loathing."

That just nailed who Kate has been her whole life. And still is.

She doesn't like "new Toby" because he has evolved and bettered himself. But like crabs in a barrel, Kate wants to drag him back down in to the misery with her.

Yeah, Team Toby all the way for me.

Toby is a perfect example of a recovering addict who gets connected, works whatever “program” he needs to work and has a psychic change that revolutionizes who he is.

Kate stopped that process and is still the same food addict she’s always been.

These two are now incompatible. They are on two completely different paths, planes, or vibrations.

Kate’s decision to choose the job is petty revenge. “He chose SF, so I’ll show him and choose LA and make the extreme choice of blowing up the marriage.” She’s still acting out her addiction.

Yep.

But SHE CLIMBED A HILL.

And TOBY DIDN'T SAY HOW MUCH LESS THE LA JOB WAS.

That seems to be the two points Kate defenders are latching on to pretty heavily (see what I did there? )

Maybe the writers got their revenge on Chrissy Metz for making them abandon their original vision of Kate's weight loss journey by making her one of the most loathsome characters in contemporary prime time.

And really, they can't give a salary an amount on a TV show because there are such regional differences that it would be picked apart no matter what number they used.

I'm hopeful that Kate taking the job will be the beginning of her growth, because I agree. She's had none. It would be nice to see her learn to live on her own. She never has.

I did feel like this was a great episode, though. It showed both sides so clearly.

I don't think I could read on Reddit. My TIU FB group is pretty evenly divided. What blows me away is that nobody is practical about it. They act like substantially more money doesn't matter at all or that it's perfectly acceptable to put Kevin and her mom ahead of Toby.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't actually Chrissy that did this. She was fine it it. Once the cancel culture heard, it was over. She and the writers/network couldn't have left that clause in her contract if they wanted to.

Well they COULD have.

But the screeches of raw outrage and PC sewage would have been heard from LA to Miami.

It took six seasons but This Is Us finally got an Eat N'Park reference into the show. It brought a fist pump and a tear to the eye of this Yinzer. That chain is a Western Pennsylvania institution.

Love me some Eat N'Park.
