Interesting, too. Because I'm on a FB TIU page, this message board, and I sometimes read the Primetimer forums (used to be Previously TV and a lot of TVw/oP went there) and every single group overwhelmingly doesn't like Kate, thinks she's whiny, thinks this makes no sense. Some people take her side and I think them seem to be mostly bitter, divorced women and mom's with special needs kids who had issues with their hubs/baby daddies. If the show runners think people were going to feel sorry for Kate or truly be happy for her, they completely missed the mark.

My theory is that it's still Sophie. Kevin looked at her longingly at the engagement party. I think she and her husband split up sometime between the engagement party and the wedding. Kevin is serial dating bimbos because he doesn't want to care about them, but can't be alone. Sophie is the only one for him.
I think several things messed up this show. Covid cost us 2 episodes last year. BLM stuff changes several episodes. Biggest one was Kate not having weight loss surgery. I think those 3 things changed the pacing of the seasons and some of the story lines.

Yeah, this episode was the first time in 6 seasons that I felt remotely sympathetic for Kate, but it wasn't FOR her - rather because of what a raging douche Toby became in that last 2 years.
I get it that he was handling his shite, taking the SF job to provide for his family, even though they were down in LA, but here's the thing: When you say "I'm taking the LA job because that's the only way we can keep our family," all the snarky one-liners and zingers about Kate's teaching job, etc. are done.
You get to be Mr. Dean Martin Roast, or you can be with your family. You can't have both, if you're in "save my family" mode.
They blew up 6 years of goodwill for Toby in a single episode, spanning 18 months.

I sure hope so. I got so excited when I saw Alexandra Breckinridge's name in the credits at the beginning of the show. They're not going to pull her back for just some bogus across-the-room shot.
They still need to pay off the tease of the emerald ring in Sophie's family that Kevin wasn't ever worthy to give her. Failure to do so would be a massive misstep.

I think they did a pretty good job today.
Only weird moment was family photos early in the day. It was Madisons 3 kids, but none of the other generation 3 kids.
ETA: loved the Beth and Madison little side detective story.
