ETA: I worked on Tomcats for over a decade. I'll be in the theater opening night.

That's what I don't understand. I love Top Gun just like everyone else. I can go watch it right now if I want, it's one of those movies I can watch over and over and always enjoy. Not sure why people are so giddy at seeing a bunch of over the top call back references to Top Gun.
If it's just to build hype for the movie fine, but if the movie is just a carbon copy of the first one down to the same freaking scenes (beach sports scene, bar singing scene, etc.) it's pretty much everything wrong with Hollywood digging up these old movies.

This looks amazing and my level of anticipation is only surpassed by anticipating SW7.
I have concerns, though.
We see a female pilot with the call sign Phoenix. Trigger warning that another all time great movie from days past is going to be ruined because a female has to shoehorned in to be the best of the best.

I hate all of the reboots but that actually looks okay, just for the cool fighter footage. Mav being only a captain is kind of funny, but also kind of sad/corny.

The ability of some to get triggered by the mere presence of a female is amazing.
