That site lists Lafayette High, Acadiana, Comeaux, Northside, and Teurlings having teams in the 80’s.

Cool. Generally, no one gave a shite about wrestling and when this movie came out, no one still gave shite about wrestling.

I wrestled at Lafayette high and Acadiana in the 80’s.

Why are you making snarky comments just for being proven wrong by other posters?

This movie was required viewing for all HS wrestlers.
Yep! My HS coach even had us come out to "Lunatic Fringe". Blacked out gym, black sweats and hoodies with the hoods on our head. Single spotlight on the center of the mat. We came single file by weight class, jogging around the spotlight.

That guy was doing stadium bleachers with a telephone pole on his back,
My coach made us run a mile with a brick in each hand TO WARM UP FOR PRACTICE!

We weighed in before and after every practice. One practice everyone was coming in overweight, so he announces that we are going to have a "Four Pound Practice". Practice wasn't over until everyone lost 4lbs. A few lost six.

He wasn't very happy about our performance against a Bham school. It was an hour away from our school. He made us run in place in the middle of the aisle all the way back on the bus.

I know it sounds harsh, and no way that would fly today, but he ended up with two State champions in his first 3 year, in a program he started from scratch with zero kids having any experience in wrestling. I still remember our very first meeting when the program started and guys were considering coming out for the team. He said if you make it thru the season, this will be the toughest thing you will ever do in your life. He did not lie. When I went to boot camp, it was a joke compared how hard wrestling season was.

My Dad boxed in high school. When were the last HS boxing matches in Louisiana?

ETA. A little research shows me that high school boxing in Louisiana ended in 1958

Where do you live in the South that wrestling isn't a thing?
I knew exactly zero wrestlers and knew of zero schools with wrestling. Could not tell you the closest wrestling program. Graduated in 1985.

Out there in the boonies they might not have had much wrestling. LSU was a nationally ranked school in wrestling when you were in high school.

We had wrestling at my HS 79-82.
Neighbor was a wrestler in his HS back in the late 90s.
He has a Cauliflower Ear to prove it.

Not sure if both HSs still have their programs or not.
