I realize there’s likely a thread already on here, but I’ve got to make a quick decision on whether to go see it tonight. I noticed my local theatre brought it back and it includes a taped Q&A with writer/director Osgood Perkins and a 1st look at The Monkey. Haven’t seen anything Halloweeny at the theatre this season, and I won’t be able to go tomorrow when it leaves.

Thoughts?

It’s worth the watch for Cage’s performance alone. A weak third act keeps it from being great.

It doesn’t have to be great—I just enjoy going to movies by myself occasionally, and it’s such a nice night out that it may be the perfect time.

I thought it couldnt decide if it was a naturalistic thriller or a supernatural horror movie and that held it back.

Would have preferred more naturalistic which is why i think the 3rd act hurts it

Cage was awesome but besides that, I thought it was just so so. Not as good as it was hyped.

Like others have said, the first 2 acts are great, the 3rd act makes no sense

Definitely worth a watch, especially in the theater. Let us know what you think

Very weak movie that didn’t know what it wanted to be.

Main actress was a robot. The story’s flow was about as weak as it could be.

Only 2 redeeming qualities:

1. Cage’s overacting

2. The filmography. It was filmed exceptionally well.

Everything else was meh.

The story legitimately made me angry at one point.

4/10

One of my biggest issues.

It didn’t know what it was.

Good, could've been great. Very well made with lackluster script

Honestly.... I thought it was overblown shite... People were raving about it as if it was Zodiac or Silence of the Lambs...

The protagonist was boring. The Antagonist was rarely seen. The payoff was very "got ya!"

Trash movie and a waste of time.

Probably the most overhyped movie I’ve seen since The Fountain. And like that movie is has the potential to be great with a couple of great scenes but the rest of the movie just doesn’t come together like it should. Someone wrote up a good explanation of everyone’s part to play in the movie that gave it some added points, but still a massive letdown. I was expecting a supernatural silence of the lambs but nope.

Yeah, I saw it when it first came out. Story line overall was weak and it was louder than F in the theater, Cage was freaky as hell but he doesn't save the movie. I won't watch it again.

People are begging and pleading for good horror and they over hype anything that some think delivers

The movie was ok until it unraveled at the end. Going full supernatural took away a lot and how they fit it together was shite. You also knew it was coming somehow because the Witt was too big of an actress for a throwaway role.

At least the Fountain had an excuse

The director’s next movie comes out this week. The consensus so far seems to be “very funny and very gory”

There's just so much content available now, and this genre especially has always been formulaic.

I think the audience is more advanced and appreciates (or even expects) something unique to justify a good rating, which is why A24 initially found its niche so well.

But then problems come along when they don't stick the landing, and all of that world-building that isn't very well explained suddenly feels out of place and weird, and people can't appreciate it as a whole because there's no real logical plot.

The creators have become hyper-focused on CGI visuals, social commentary, and "twists," and they've forgotten how to write empathetic characters and an actual story arc.
