They’re definitely trying to make him the next big thing, but there’s something off about him. I don’t rate him tbqh.

His character, the white guy below, in 2022's Devotion reminded me of Robert Conrad from Black Sheep Squadron series
Conrad is also on the right below.
Maybe Powell needs to do a Western to see if he can be as cool as Jim West was.

What’s this board opinion on Glenn Powell?
For me? The man can do no wrong. He hooked me in Maverick and just reels me in to whatever shenanigans he partakes in.

He's a really nice guy in person ... worked with him a few times (previously mentioned Devotion being one of them).
Did his own stunts on Devotion and it was pretty tough fall into some fake snow packed ground.
And he had the previously shown girlfriend in tow as well. And my lord - she was something in person. Good guy and happy for his continued run.

Yeah he's being pushed as the next big leading man. I wouldn't quite describe it as "something off about him," but he doesn't have the charisma or the chops to be the next Tom Cruise / Brad Pitt level star.
The movie he made with Sydney Sweeney was a success and had surprising legs in the theater, but I think the movie needed both of their names to draw in the viewers. It was a success because it happened to have the It Guy and the It Girl of the moment. Hit Man doesn't tell us anything because it is a "one week in the theater then straight to Netflix" movie.
I think he'll have a fine career but I don't see him reaching superstar status.

Do you remember early Brad Pitt movies?
He definitely wasn’t as charismatic as we remember him by Fight Club

Yeah, but this guy is already 35. As someone else mentioned that puts him more on a Bradley Cooper trajectory. Pitt was 28 when he made A River Runs Through It.

He's kind of a poor mans Matthew McConaughey. MM broke out w/ some impressive action and drama roles. GP has yet to do that so the question is can he lead a big budget action flick or shine in a smaller drama (Dallas Buyers Club and True Detective).
Dallas Buyers Club was 20 years after Dazed and Confused. Please tell me where the impressive action and drama break out was? Sahara? Reign of Fire? Tropic Thunder? Fools Gold?

Brad Pitt was the most charismatic young man women had seen in decades when he had the one night stand with Geena Davis in 1991's Thelma & Louise. They went nuts over him then.
By the time he rode into 1994's Legends of the Fall on a horse, 1/2 the married women in the US would have divorced their husbands over him.
Not his character in the movies, just him.

“Breakout” is the wrong word to use but I think he’s describing the McConissiance, where he came out of nowhere to lead these huge dramatic roles and rivive his career after a major dip from his original run. I think he’s saying he wanted Powell to prove that he can do that
He never really tried that stuff in the first decade of his career, as you point out; it was a lot of different random stuff, mostly rom coms during that time.

drama break out
A Time to Kill (according to MM in his autobiography Green Lights) was the role that broke him through to true celebrity.

I get him and Lewis Pullman confused with one another. Doesn’t help that they were both in maverick
