ust so people who weren't there know... It wasn't just that there was a huge buzz after the film was released. The pre-release marketing for the film was almost entirely on the internet and consisted of fake interviews, fake police reports, fake news reports, etc. (Before "fake news" was a thing.) The actual viewing of the film was the last piece of the puzzle. Which is why viewing it now, on its own, is no where near the experience that we got when we went through the viral build-up (before viral was a thing) and then couldn't wait to see the final chapter in the theater.

It was the 90's and we all thought we were Mulder and Scully, "discovering" this stuff through our Netscape browsers and WebCrawler search engines and GeoCities web pages.

The internet was a thing when it was released. What wasn't a thing when it was released was social media. That is why it couldn't be done today.

I'm with you. It scared the crap out of me when it came out and it killed the horror genre for me. I doubt it will happen again either, but it was very creative at the time.

I caught it on TV and the same thing happened to me. No way in hell I was going to get past the first 10 minutes or so of that crap.

There was a mystique that people thought it was real. In today’s internet age everyone knows it’s fake so no, it isn’t reproducible
No rational people thought it was real then. Everyone knew it was fake besides conspiracy theorists and idiots. Doesn’t mean it wasn’t fun

The world has no shortage of that now so I don’t see why a concept of similar nature wouldn’t still be possible

Also paranormal activity did the found footage from home security cams. So it took it in a different direction

Original Paranormal Activity scared the frick out of me. I haven't sat down and watched a scary movie since seeing that in theaters.

That is absolutely untrue.

The 3 people in the movie promoted it and did interviews. People with any sense and watched TV slightly knew it was fake.

I hope not. I'm still pissed about the money I wasted watching that garbage. It's in my top 5 worst movies of all time.

Depends on what you mean by social media. Yeah, Facebook, Twitter, Insta, etc weren't around, but AOL (not to mention ICQ, IRC, Computerserve, etc) and its chatrooms were YUGE in those days. And people on there were undoubtedly talking about the movie.

It was the best found footage movie since Cannibal Holocaust. Then Paranormal Activity was next IMO

Yes, dip shite, obviously once the cast starting doing interviews everyone knew, but that was all much later. Initially it was only released in limited theaters and the cast was not in the public eye.

There was a promo on tv about it and the backstory making you think it was real. MTV maybe?

We were teenagers going out every night and not paying much attention. I saw that promo and yep, when we went to see it, I thought it was real too. Freaked me the hell out.

I’d like to see a short documentary behind the scenes about how they did that.

You could use social media the same way. You could do a ton of interesting marketing through those platforms. It’s today’s universal cynicism that would damage the attempt. Even though almost everyone knew that they were winking at us with the 90’s marketing, it would be met with shouts of “fake” today, with everyone rushing to declare that they’re too smart to enjoy the ride.

Barely anyone knew of it in limited release. I worked at a movie theater when it was released, we did not think it was real by the point the masses were getting trailers and prepping for it, which is when 99.99999% of TD would have seen stuff about it. They tried to market it that way, sure, but it sounds like you were pretty impressionable.

It’s not like movie reviews just popped up with social media and YouTube either, reviewers were calling it a fake documentary after its Sundance showing.
