Looks good Im in. Would have been good to have Gandolfini around to talk to though.

May be a good historical record.
Based on the recent movie I question whether Chase started with a good premise …. but the writers were the real brains behind the operation with an exceptional cast who executed perfectly.

Anyone else watch this?
Entertaining, some good insights. Amazing to hear/see Chase's influences from Chinatown and Kubrick's 2001 that shaped a couple of episodes.
Possibly his best explanation for the final scene of the series. His cinematographer's explanation was great as well.
Odd to see that Chase is such a dour person, and he came up with one of the most entertaining series of all time.

Enjoyed the hell out of this two part documentary. Loved hearing the input from the writers on why certain characters and parts were carried out how they were. I also had no idea Gandolfini's drinking was as bad as it was.
There will never be another show with the staying power of The Sopranos. It's simply tGOAT.

It’s definitely worth a watch.
The casting audition tapes are fascinating. Gamdolfini was the obvious
choice besed on the videos. Same for Imperioli and Sirico.

very well done and a must watch if you liked the show. David Chase is a complicated dude which I guess should have been obvious but I’d never seen him interviewed like that before.
and the stuff about gandolfini was really something I hadn’t thought about before. It seems he was a really sensitive person and the violence of that character kind of reflected back on him. I don’t know if that’s sad or regrettable or what but it does make sense

Absolutely loved it. I already had Sopranos as my #1 series of all time and this just further enforces it. Did not know Gandolfini was getting a million bucks an episode, that’s crazy
I never had a problem with the ending and the explanations of all the call backs in the last episode made me love the ending even more

That was something Gandolfini understood all too well. A few seasons in, the actor told Seitz, off the record, that he wasn’t sure about renewing his contract.
He’ll never forget what Gandolfini said: “When I come home after shooting, there are times when no matter how long I spend in the shower, I can’t wash off the stink from this guy."

Man this was so good. I am really disappointed it was only two episodes as i think they could have done a few more. Fascinating stuff about James Gandolfini and why he was so good in that role. The show was built on its casting and then Chase's insistence that they stayed away from standard television writing. I also think his season outlines gave a great bunch of writers the foundation they needed. How did someone who created The Sopranos also create The Many Saints of Newark? Chase should have brought his old writing team back together.

Loved this and didn't know that gandolfini had substance abuse issues.
I thought I'd heard that he was a teddy bear in real life and polar opposite of his character.

David Chase's eulogy of James was interesting:
quote:
The cameras rolled and you opened the refrigerator door and you slammed it really hard. You slammed it hard enough that it came open again and you slammed it again and it came open again. You kept slamming it and slamming it and slamming it and slamming it and went apeshit on that refrigerator. The funny part for me was, I remember Steven Van Zandt – cause the cameras are now going and we have to play this whole five-minute scene with the refrigerator door open. And I remember Steven Van Zandt just standing there with his lip out and trying to figure out, “Well, what should I do first as Silvio? Cause he just broke my refrigerator.” And then as Steven the actor cause we’re about to play a scene with a refrigerator door open — people don’t do that. And I remember him going over, trying to tinker with the door and fix it, and it didn’t work.
We finally had to call cut and we tried to fix the refrigerator door and it never really worked because then the gaffer tape showed inside the refrigerator and it was a problem all day long. And I remember you saying: “Ah, this role, this role. The places it takes me too, the things that I have to do, it’s so dark.” And I remember telling you, “Did I tell you to destroy the refrigerator? Does it say anywhere in the script, ‘Tony destroys a refrigerator?’ It says, ‘Tony angrily shuts the refrigerator door.’ That’s what it says. You destroyed the refrigerator.”
