Luke is a good guy. Neo has no personality. Not to mention Keanu is one of the worst actors to ever live. He may be a bad arse, but a crappy character.

As a character that embodies the myth of the hero, Neo is a literal mashup of the history of heroes from Roman mythology to cyber-punk and graphic novels. He is actually quite a brilliant character.
"The Matrix," is one infatuation where the hype and fanboy inspiration of the film ends up over-shadowing its actual importance and complexity, imo. Despite its popularity, the movie is still an interesting study in filmic and literary devices.
