Bill Anderson or Tom T. Hall
Wow, didn't know Tom T. Hall was still with us!
I'd go with Dylan too for the gold.
Silver to Donald Fagen.
Bronze to a recent/younger singer - Colin Meloy if only for "The King is Dead".
And Miss Americana - Patty Griffin over Taylor by a mile!

I've listened to all of Ms. Swift's records since "1989;" my daughters are big fans. The woman can write a solid pop-song, but I wouldn't put her in a class with Dylan, McCartney, or Springsteen by any stretch. The longevity's just not there.

Dylan of course. Other good ones, Mick Jagger Tom Waits, Neil Young, Stephen Malkmus, Beck, Terry Allen, Issac Brock, Jimmy Smith, Lucinda Williams, Billy Bragg, Robert Plant, Pete Townsend, Jimmy Smith, Jeff Tweedy, Jay Farrar, John Doe.....

Another shitty Taylor Swift trolling. Is this every week now?

Are we just talking about lyricists or does this include musical arrangement too? James Hetfield, Mikael Akerfeldt, Devin Townsend, and Tuomas Holopainen are all certainly better musically than any old pop or folk singer. Holopainen's lyrics are solid too.

In addition to Dylan and Macca, I'd suggest Diane Warren.

Sir Paul.
Honorable mention to Dolly Parton.

John Fogerty is in there. It took him 30 years to get around to writing a love song, "Joy Of My Life," and look at all the portraits he painted during that time.
Stephen Sondheim is beyond compare.
Stephen Sondheim is beyond compare.

No Tom Petty? No one tells a story like Petty. If you asked Bruce who was better he would agree.

Dylan - Consensus "best" (quality, influence, etc.) - and really, Leonard Cohen was probably the only real competition until he passed - hell, I don't know who is the second spot right now (unless it's Maca)
Agree with this. Paul Simon is who I would put in second now that Cohen has passed.
But it’s hard to imagine anyone ever surpassing what Dylan has done.

Elvis Costello: multiple genres, clever lyrics, prolific

David Allan Coe would get a lot more recognition if he weren't so weird
