Stabbing Westward opened twice on separate tours for Depeche Mode in the 90's. They sounded pretty damn amazing.

Medeski Martin & Wood opening for Morphine, also in Cleveland, in 1995. Never heard of them but they blew me away. I picked up their Friday Afternoon in the Universe CD at the merch table and was really impressed by how tight and polished and jazzy it sounded when their live performance was a lot looser and they seemed more like a hippie jam band.

The first time I heard/saw Galactic they were opening for moe. in Buffalo in 1996. Stanton Moore was just this young kid in a white button down shirt and tie. I picked up their Coolin’ Off CD at the merch table. (RIP Houseman).

Those are the two bands I got turned on to as opening acts. I already knew Banyan but their opening set for Les Claypool’s Frog Brigade on New Year’s Eve 2000 at the Fillmore in San Francisco was mind blowing. (After the show we cruised over to the Warfield and bribed our way in to catch the end of the Galactic show.)

I’ve also seen Bruce Hornsby & The Range, Sting, and Traffic all open for the Grateful Dead.

Rockpile opening for Blondie, in New Orleans in summer 1979 (can’t remember the venue, I was pretty drunk).

This was when “Cruel To Be Kind” was a hit. Of course I was already a huge Nick Lowe fan by then.

Steely Dan opened for Frank Zappa. '75 maybe?

John Mayall opened for Alice Cooper (who sucked). OKC '71 or '72

I wasn't there, but some of my friends went. Jimi Hendrix opened for the Monkees. Can't remember the date but I think it was '68. Wichita.

Tesla opened for Def Leppard back in the late 80's in Nola.
Both were good, but Tesla freaking blew it up.

Argh I forgot about Soundgarden opening for Guns n Roses. Tough call between them and Pantera for best opener.

David Peters is my uncle's brother.

I inherited a bunch of signed Leroux vinyl from my dad.

Back in 1980 Louisiana Leroux opened for The doobie brothers at the Centrelplex.

I was at that one. Leroux was a great band for a few years there. That was when "UP" came out--very underrated album.

Orang Goblin opening for Clutch in Dallas back in 2012.

Close second was Royal Thunder opening for The Sword in New Orleans.

King Buffalo was a nice surprise when they opened for The Sword at the Varsity a few years back.

John Kay and Steppenwolf opened for the Guess Who in the early 70's. They closed with Born to be Wild, and the biker dudes in the crowd went absolutely nuts.

I went to a bar and saw a little known band called Protein open for King's X. They never really went anywhere and have long been broken up but I still spin their albums, especially Songs About Cowgirls.

GNR opening for the Cult at the Saenger for me.

Biggest surprise was Machine Head opening for Corrosion for Conformity at the Varsity. They kicked arse.

I am excluding co-headliners/double bills for obvious reasons:

1a. Louisiana's Leroux for BOC, March 4, 1983 (yeah, I'm old buddy, wanna fight about it?).

1b. Melissa Etheridge for the Eagles, in the Superdome, July 21, 1994.

Honorable mention: Def Leppard with no opening act, Oakland, CA, September 26, 1992 (they just played flat out for about 3 hours - effectively opening for themselves)
