The Band(wasn't ugly when it happened in the late 70s but became ugly in the 80s)
The Allman Brothers in the late70s/early 80s(maybe the only great band to be broken up by a roadie)
Pink Floyd(How many band break ups get feature stories written about them in Penthouse?)

Decent article but seemed pretty superficial. Plenty of juicy deets left out.

Bauhaus breakup was ugly. Peter Murphy went in the hospital right before they were scheduled to record their, as it turned out, last album. The other band Members went ahead and recorded it mostly without him with Daniel Ash doing the lead vocals. At the start of the tour to support the album they disabanded and Ash and a roadie started Tones on Tail and then they all scheduled a rehearsal for a Bauhaus reunion but Peter Murphy didn't show. The other three members rehearsed and decided to start Love and Rockets

Chicago break up with Peter Cetera back in 1985-86. Cannot remember where I read an article that stated that a couple of band members were jealous of Cetera b/c all the attention was directed to him. Plus he was already romanticizing with a solo career and David Foster, being a musical genius that he is, gave him his blessing. They started collaborating and Peter became very successful up until the mid 90's when his career started to decline.

Cetera and Foster wrote the 2 hits on Chicago 16 Hard to say I'm sorry and Love me tomorrow. The band then toured and took a break when they went to go to the studio to start working on Chicago 17 they were presented with several that Cetera and Foster had already written.

Chicago 17 had a lot of Cetera hits, but it also did not have many horns and did not sound like many Chicago songs.

Once Jeff made a move on Jay's women, it was over.

The fact that the rest of the band sided with Jeff and started a new band with him seems to indicate Jay was the problem.

That's b/c prior to Chicago 16, their 1980 album Chicago XIV flopped and was a commercial failure. As a result, their record label dropped them. Probably the horn section at the time was getting old and somehow they had to change the sound strategy in order to stay alive in the music business. That's when Foster stepped in. 16 & 17 albums were the savior for the continued band success, even though they went straight to a Pop adult contemporary sound. It was either that or disbanding. And the band desperately needed the high album sales for profit.

Van Halen

This has to be near the top of any list. When Roth left VH they were the premier rock band in the world.

By the time they split with Hagar, while still relevant, VH wasn't nearly as big as in their heyday with DLR.

I was going to do long Kafka-esque post about Bauhaus and the breakup. It might be the one band break up where it it turns out better for all involved including fans.

That's not what happened... Jay quit and went and did his own thing.. The original UT drummer, joined Jay in the original formation Son Volt

You think?

You think a tour? Or just a one of like Celebration Day for Led Zepplin.

And calm down. I LOVE Zepplin. I am not comparing them. Other than type of show they might try to put on.

That would be my first question to Peter. What does it mean? My guess is it's about spirituality.

To me, it is just a great song that reminds me of a certain time and best friend that committed suicide.
