I just watched an interview with George where he said the White Album should have come out as a single disc with 14 songs. Is he right? Go ahead decide which 14 make the cut.

This should be in the Beatles obsession thread, but here's the right answer:

Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da
Bungalow Bill
While My Guitar Gently Weeps
Happiness Is a Warm Gun
I'm So Tired
Blackbird
Rocky Raccoon
I Will
Julia
Yer Blues
Sexy Sadie
Helter Skelter
Honey Pie
Savoy Truffle

The problem for me is that there are at least 8 more songs I would have trouble leaving off.

Billy Joel just called the album "a collection of half-assed songs" that were unfinished or lacked focus so I guess he agrees. It definitely has some filler sounding material that i could do without. But also a lot of greatness. In the order from the album:

Dear Prudence
Glass Onion
While My Guitar Gently Weeps
Happiness Is a Warm Gun
Martha My Dear
I'm So Tired
Blackbird
Rocky Raccoon
Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except for Me and My Monkey
Revolution 1
Savoy Truffle
Cry Baby Cry

So it really only needed to be 12 songs not 14. Not sure that would fit on one album though but I guess that is why he said CD.

Definitely not Back In The USSR. That song sucks.

No, its imbalance and lack of a cohesive themed album is what makes it (in my opinion) one of the best double albums ever recorded.

If I could remove a few songs, and it would only be a few, they would be:

Honey Pie
Wild Honey Pie
Don't Pass Me By
Ob La Di Ob La Da

But I'd replace them with Lennon's "Look at Me", "Child of Nature", McCartney's "Junk", Harrison's "Not Guilty" and "Sour Milk Sea".

...for the record I'd leave in Revolution #9

No way! Only Wild Honey Pie should be excluded. I never really considered that or Revolution #9 to be canon.

I'd be fine with that as well. As is, I think it's almost perfect.

The Esher sessions are also impressive.
