GFL is fricking horrible. The album is one long screech from the vocalist.

There are so many better bands out there today.

The best thing would've been for them to be under the radar for another 5 years. With some more woodshedding under their belt, they could've found their own sound. Right now, they're good at aping the sound of their heroes, but unlike LZ, there's not much beyond the surface. Unless the biz swallows them up, I'll still keep an eye out for them... they've got potential to be special, but they're not there yet. In their defense, many legendary bands took a few albums before clicking, so I'll withhold final judgement before deciding if they're inexperienced or just suck

The lead singer is the problem in GvF. I like the bluesy old school music but the singer is horrible (especially watching him during a live performance).

They are the rock in roll equivalent of lofi hip hop radio beats to study/relax to. Harmless, boring, background noise ambien that has no crunch, edge, or soul to it. They’re basically just trippy Phil Collins with fuzzy guitars.

GVF could probably get away with ripping off Zeppelin's sound if their lyrics didn't all sound like what an AI lyric generator would spit out if you told it you wanted to sound like Zeppelin.

There are only two possible opinions of Greta Van Fleet:
A. They sound like Led Zeppelin, the GOAT rock band, so they are good.
B. They sound like Led Zeppelin, the GOAT rock band, so they are bad.

You forgot.. didn't really care for it the first time around (LZ)... def don't need to hear it again (GVF)..

thanks for posting this. It ends with the phrase "there are worse things you can sound like than LZ" - great way to sum it up.

You guys are fricked if you think king gizzard sucks. They have an album of every genre of music and released 5 totally different albums in one year. I get it to not like them I guess but to say they suck is straight up ignorant

Their SNL performance solidified them in my mind as imposters.

ETA: it was laughably bad

That snl performance gets knocked a lot. It was their first giant national exposure. I’m sure they were nervous and over hyped.

Musically though I love them. I can’t help it. They sound awesome. And you have to remember, they’re all friends and brothers under the age of 25.

They’re young. And still finding their sound and style. Many many rock bands sounded like other people before they found their sound. I’ll still give them a chance as they put out new music. They’re very talented and I dig their sound. I can’t think of a young band that puts out music like they do. And they get way too much hate from 50 year old jackass rock gatekeepers.

Here’s a couple of non-snl live performances:

Highway Tune

Safari Song

It’s crazy to me that a bunch of young kids exploded into rock and roll with heavy 70s grooves and a very talented lead man and the collective rock world took a shite on them because they sounded too much like what they’ve been begging for since the 80s.

I have a lot of “terrible” hot takes, but they’re my takes and I’m willing to own them. I am well aware that my preferences are well out of step with this board as well as the mainstream. I just calls ‘em as I sees ‘em.

It’s like a wife who nags her husband over and over and over again to do something, but then when he does it, she’s like “oh, well, not like THAT!” Music critics will never be satisfied. With that said, GVF needs to find their own voice in the next album. It’s okay to get famous for sounding similar to a famous band. Heck, Rush first got popular in the U.S. when Americans in Detroit heard “Working Man” over Canadian radio stations and started calling in requesting it, thinking it was a new Zeppelin track. However, Rush evolved past mimicry into their own thing, and GVF needs to do the same. Even if they do, however, critics will be there to bash them for “abandoning their fans”.
